I hate to admit this but I know nothing about "chromebooks" but these are the computers used by the middle school students. If I want them to have a "command line" experience can we get into DOS like on old windows PCs?I like to show students that the OS is just a program to help you move files around and run applications. I know how to write simple bat files and do things in windows... but I don't know where to start on a modern machine.

@cykonot It's Linux on a chromebook? Why did I think it was some other Third Thing?Thank you so much if they can get into this I can show them how to cause a lot of trouble-- I mean have a great educational time. I have brought chromebook home and have been trying to force myself to use it so I'll have to learn it. But I have also been very lazy about this.

@futurebird i've heard a lot about the restrictions on chromebooks and how trying to do real OS things on them can require quite a lot of hoop jumping

@futurebird Chromebooks AFAIK run a custom Linux distribution, which would be nice – except this one is made by Google, so I would expect it to be pretty locked down in what it allows users to do.If you have one handy to test, you can try booting it up and then pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 – on virtually all *nix system, this takes you to the first TTY (short for teletyper, historical artifact of mainframe times), which is the classic text-only interface for *nix systems.

@futurebird @cykonot Even better, from the Terminal application, you can install KDE discover: https://chromeunboxed.com/install-linux-app-store-kde-discover-chromebook-one-click-install/Once it's set up, you can run pretty much any Linux app on a Chromebook, including DosBox, or even Firefox and @Vivaldi.

@futurebird If that doesn't work, there should be an app-store-ish program pre-installed in which you can probably find a terminal to install – that would enable you to do the same things without leaving the graphical interface.

@phryk I will look for this first. Having them boot it up on the command line will be too confusing since they will need to restart it again to see the changes they make.

@cykonot That could work too... although what I really want to show them is how files are stored locally on their hard drive and how that isn't the same as when those files are in one of the many clouds we use without thinking about it much. I can't help but think growing up with dial up made this distinction clear to some of us in a way that's lost on younger people.

@futurebird oh, the CTRL+ALT+F1 thing is instant (if it's not disabled because Google) – you can just switch between TTY and GUI whenever. You even have multiple TTYs to play on (CTRL+ALT+F2 will take you to the second one, for example).

@futurebird Yes, chromebooks have an option, in the settings, to enable a linux terminal. It downloads an awful lot and then you have what is effectively a terminal where "sudo apt install inkscape" does that – the full linux experience is there. The specs of the machines are often low though so don't expect resource-hungry applications like e.g., Blender to work great.

@futurebird I'm not even slightly tech savvy when it comes to programming, but my Chromebook came with a dual OS option with the other being Linux. This allowed me to run a lot of programs that don't work on Chrome.

@futurebird Chomebooks do not have an OS that is just a program to move files around and run applications. It's basically just a single application. Chrome. Everything is web based. You can get a terminal Web app, but there's not much to do there.

@futurebird @cykonot it’s definitely Linux under the hood, but Google intentionally refers to the whole kit and kaboodle as “ChromeOS” so the confusion is not unreasonable!

@futurebirdThere should also be a files app that lets you see downloads and saved music or videos.
