@kzimmermann These days I think the markets in Shenzhen in China are the new #Akihabara. It's much more corporate and far less cool, but it's now where all the new tech comes from.

@mike was this an acknowledged Mastodon instance, or was it just Trump using the Mastodon code (against the AGPL at that) to try and create his own walled garden?

@kev Oddly enough, the example of a terrible twitter thread that you picked is actually a really good example of why a blog post is better, because it actually is a blog post [1]. It's also a mastodon thread at mamot.fr [2] Cory's been blogging for 20 years now, and has no plans on surrendering his stuff to twitter [3]refs1. https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/16/sociopathic-monsters/2. @pluralistic 3. https://pluralistic.net/2021/01/13/two-decades/

@kev @pluralistic I think he does it for the exposure. It's much better for him to write out the whole post to the platform with the largest audience. It promotes RTs of specific points or sections that may resonate with a wider audience than just a naked link. Read point 3 to get more info on why

@ericbuijs @Tay0 back in the late 90s, someone once did a comparison of The WeLL and the broader internet as a comparison between Sausalito (which was still a relatively sleepy town back then) and San Francisco. Mastodon vs twitter seems like that today.

@zeab Judging from the constant stream of new people in the local feed here, *A LOT*. And this is a relatively small mastodon server.

@kev It makes me really happy to hear that. I know that the influx of Muskugees caused an unexpected weekend of hell, and I'm glad you're able to come out the other side on a high.

I was looking on instances.social and I noticed that the mastodon instance I always thought of as the tiny, personal instance now has > 27000 users. That prompted me to go to hub.fosstodon.org/support/ and donate. Thanks so much for all of the work that you guys do, to keep fosstodon a warm, welcoming and inclusive community. That's a much harder challenge than keeping it running, which you guys have also done admirably. Thanks to @kev @mike @cooper @ru and @grueproof

When I joined fosstodon, it was a tiny, comfortable space for weirdos like me It now has > 45000 users and now is consistently in the top 20 instances in the world. It also costs USD2k to run, and _needs_ your donation! Please go to https://hub.fosstodon.org/support/Thanks so much for keeping fosstodon a warm, welcoming and inclusive community. @llebrun @peter so I did a little digging into this, and it looks like Eugen's instances (mastodon.social and mastodon.online) are having a real problem with moderators with an itchy ban trigger. Most instances do not have this problem, but as long as Eugen's instances are going to be the flagships, this is going to be a problem.

@pluralistic shining a light on Canadian Federal Gov't spending billions on Consultants, when we have a perfectly good civil service that is supposed to be doing these things. For all my #ottawa civil service homies. https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/31/mckinsey-and-canada/

@mirek svn does way better at dealing with large binaries than git. It’s important for some projects.
