Is the "Steve Gibson knows something about security" a function of US-specific media? Because good heavens I have seen literally nothing that indicates he has any idea what he's talking about, but US people keep implying that he might know things.

@mjg59 his podcast was the first security podcast I ever listened to, back when I was first getting into security, and I will never stop being pissed off that I got conned.

@mjg59 No, I've seen plenty of UK people with the same illusion. And they get quite offended when you tell them that the magic software they've been running on their disks does nothing now, and probably did nothing when it was first touted around...

@mjg59 that's not true.Steve was pioneering automated UI based stuff 20+ years ago and a lot of us did use his work to test out Open Source code. We did at Smoothwall regularly. I know the Sourceforge and pfSense teams did too.

@mjg59 A very long time ago, his Spinrite sorted out latency on my IDE drives and the Shields Up! web page was a useful scanner. Both products were of above average quality. Not used anything of his since, but he may surprise us some day :-)

@mjg59 I encountered GRC before the hackers movie and so my head Canon is "hack the Gibson" refers to him. So clearly he must be an expert if he's the ultimate target
