@mat @wilhelm @bitwarden I haven’t looked in to ownership and data sharing, but have you looked at Authy, which is doing the TOTP (only). I used it a couple of years ago when I first migrated away from Google Authenticator. These days I, as suggested above in various replies, am using Bitwarden with Yubikeys, so I haven’t used Authy in a long time and cannot vouch for them, but I do know they exist (and aren’t, I think, Google or Microsoft etc).

@dee Great explanatory thread this. Reading it I also reflect on that many new users seem confused by the amount of both "instances" and "services", as we in some cases talk about a closed service and in other cases talk about protocol functionality, often between services.People often think they *have* to create new accounts for each instance to talk to its users, which they obviously don't in most cases. However, they *do* have to create another login/account when jumping on to a "new" service (say, Pixelfed, PeerTube or Lemmy etc).I know that some think how it works today is a benefit: you can create different accounts based on your interests/mood etc, and log on to another server when you wish to only talk about a specific topic. However, for many (most?) users I think they don't feel the need to act as a different person just because they now wish to upload videos, or save bookmarks etc, even if they wish to use a more suitable service that particular functionality. It would have been amazing if the users could optionally use one Fediverse account to act as an central Identity Provider (IDP) for the other Fediverse services and automatically cross-link your user account between services, so the users only needed to keep track of one login/password but still could add the functionality of the compatible services to "their profile".From the user perspective it would enable them to login to a new service authenticated via their old/chosen service and they could opt to either extend their existing profile with the capability to log in with the same user credentials. Kind of like you today can "verify" a web site as truly yours. Not like a "migrate to new service", but still "use my other service to verify I am me, but over here".I do understand the challenges in this type of functionality, but it would have been nice. :)

@kinetix @mathias @Stan Right now I'm in the process of having taken a backup, deleted it all, re-installing and currently importing the db_backup (it takes time). A few raised eyebrows as I did my new install though.1. I got a message saying: "warning: the dependency :earmark_parser requires Elixir "~> 1.10" but you are running on v1.9.1". Uhu? So why wasn't the correct version installed, as I followed the official installation instructions? Is this something I need to fix?2. Got another message a couple of times: "Rebar3 detected a lock file from a newer version. It will be loaded in compatibility mode, but important information may be missing or lost. It is recommended to upgrade Rebar3". So...is the lockfile part of the git repo? Do I have a newer one, or not? If I do, do I really need to update it? Or is it updated? How do I update it?These are some of the questions I have as my db_backup still trots along and I'm waiting eagerly to see if it all has worked (and which obviously is the reason I'm typing this from my Friendica account right now). :)

@mathias @kinetix @Stan @feld Right. So having re-installed it all afresh I also tried adding a source to get past the error messages. Now I *think* I have version 1.25 of what it tells me I should have version 1.10. However, this seems to lead to compilation problems for Hackney instead. I get a million of these errors now (and it doesn't federate):´´´20:05:03.166 [error] #PID<0.1968.0> running Pleroma.Web.Endpoint (connection #PID<0.1967.0>, stream id 1) terminatedServer: moc.d-x-b.com:80 (http)Request: POST /inbox** (exit) an exception was raised: ** (UndefinedFunctionError) function :hackney_bstr.join/2 is undefined (module :hackney_bstr is not available) (hackney 1.18.0) :hackney_bstr.join(["", "users", "cmegane"], "/") (hackney 1.18.0) /opt/pleroma/deps/hackney/src/hackney_url.erl:140: :hackney_url.normalize/2 (hackney 1.18.0) /opt/pleroma/deps/hackney/src/hackney.erl:311: :hackney.request/5 (tesla 1.4.1) lib/tesla/adapter/hackney.ex:71: Tesla.Adapter.Hackney.request/5 (tesla 1.4.1) lib/tesla/adapter/hackney.ex:33: Tesla.Adapter.Hackney.call/2 (pleroma 2.4.4) lib/pleroma/object/fetcher.ex:227: Pleroma.Object.Fetcher.get_object/1 (pleroma 2.4.4) lib/pleroma/object/fetcher.ex:200: Pleroma.Object.Fetcher.fetch_and_contain_remote_object_from_id/1 (pleroma 2.4.4) lib/pleroma/web/activity_pub/activity_pub.ex:1569: Pleroma.Web.ActivityPub.ActivityPub.fetch_and_prepare_user_from_ap_id/1´´´

@atomicpoetAlso, a couple of things with quote posts differ fundamentally between Fediverse services that has it, and Twitter. The most obvious one is of course lack of algorithm in the Fediverse, which is The Major cause for all Twitter issues.Secondly, we (in the Fediverse) have an opportunity to ”do it right”. We can define how it should work for ourselves. If we see someone doing a thing incorrectly, or in a bad way, we don’t HAVE to do it the same way, we can re-define how it is done. The services that do quote posts which I have tried (mainly Friendica and Akkoma in my case) both alert the original poster of that they have been quoted, just as if I would have boosted their post. They can see it, they get a notification of it. It doesn’t happen ”in secret”.However, all the current ”work-arounds” that people have to do for quotes to work today can happen in ”secret”, and doesn’t alert the original poster. If I take a screenshot of a post and post it as a new thread to my followers only, that if anything invites to bad behaviour, as you can talk about someone who isn’t there. If the original poster is ”in the room” though, people usually watch what/how they say things.I see no bigger risk for abuse in the Fediverse with quote posts than I do with ”just regular” posting.@thisismissem @BarrenPlanet

@Stark9837 In #Akkoma, if you are an instance admin, you can add other instances to your "bubble". Basically it creates a new timeline for the collection of instances you have in your bubble, and then it follows/federates in all the public posts from those instances. Quite nice, and not as random as the "Known Network" timeline can be.@apps

@ruudActually, you can add Mastodon instances too. That is one of my tests, and I noticed no difference in adding Mastodon instances compared to the two Akkoma instances I added. If I understand it correctly, the ”other” instance don’t even get a notification you’ve added them to your bubble.@apps @Stark9837

@constantine Even though I don't trust any of the providers of Fediverse statistics I find Fediverse Observer to be most believable as it also removes inactive/dead instances and doesn't have an ever growing positive trend where nothing is ever cleaned out. Also, more interestingly, it keeps track of "The Fediverse", not just Mastodon.https://fediverse.one/profile/fediverseobserver

@MetalSamurai @jupiter_rowland This is one of the areas I wish the entire Fediverse were ”prepared” for the other services privacy levels. I would like Friendica to understand, perhaps also create, ”unlisted” posts (which it can’t today). It would especially make sense for Forums/Groups I think. But on top of that, and as discussed/pointed out, it would be great if one could create ”private” groups, i.e. groups that didn’t post to the timelines of the separate users, but still could be posted to the group and everyone in the group gets it (only).

@edendestroyer Is using Calckey the goal, or is "having nice things" the goal?I am using both Akkoma and Friendica with Mona app, so we can have nice things if we are just a little flexible. ;)As a general comment to the thread: This entire thread is, for understandable reason, all about Mastodon though and kind of forgets that Mastodon is missing so many features users are accustomed to from other online experiences, but which exist in other Fediverse services, such as for example Calckey. Those things doesn't work on Mastodon, for literally no obvious/apparent reason for new users, and is often one of the bigger hurdles in retaining people. I don't see any discussion about that here though. Getting a disappointed and confused user back for another go can be just as hard, if not harder.@maegul

@AskPippa Blaming quote-posts for the demise of Twitter and its toxic culture is like blaming all car accidents on rear mirrors. What makes Twitter bad is the algorithm and the ranking system. It promotes bad behaviour by pitting conflicting post types against each other, repeatedly, to create more interaction. It can dig up old posts, or posts from other user "circles" just to stir up some noise, all in the name of creating more interaction, which of course create more advertising revenue. In the Fediverse we don't have the algorithm. We don't have a ranking system. We have a chronological timeline. When you post your post it gets its slot in the timeline and...well...that's it.All other text-based Fediverse services have quote-posts by the way. If it'd be the cause of the same issues as on Twitter we would've seen it already.https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2023/01/12/quote-tweeting-over-30-studies-dispel-some-myths/@bgtlover @raccoon

@kennykravitz They can follow each other already today. Just like you can follow users of any ActivityPub micro/macro-blog service, such as Misskey, Calckey, Friendica, Pleroma, Akkoma, GoToSocial, Hubzilla etc.Following other types of ActivityPub accounts can be a hit and miss at times, but I have been able to follow Bookwyrm accounts, Pixelfed accounts, PeerTube accounts etc.@atomicpoet

@BarrenPlanet No. Not with content. You'd lose content, bookmarks, hashtag follows and lists. Also, you can't migrate your followers with you. This is a security feature of the Fediverse that I think all the services abide to, as each user should actively opt-in on who they follow, and where. You can migrate those you follow with you to your new instance, but if you truly do a migrate that will disable your old account. If you do a migrate all your followers will be notified of your migration/move, and will be offered (automatically) to follow you on your new account.I would recommend you set up accounts on the instances/services you'd like to try out, export the list of those you follow and import that list on the new instance/service. To those you follow you will appear twice (or more, if you've done more) in their followers list as each account you have will be separate from each other (this is a thing I've been ranting about elsewhere that I'd like: a Fediverse identity provider (IDP) service...but as I can't really explain how it should work properly I can't complain too hard on it not existing, hehe). The only way to get what you ask for is to migrate to Hubzilla (with the above drawbacks, but once only). If you are on Hubzilla you can then log in on any other Hubzilla instance and it will "all be there", which includes content, contacts etc. If your main Hubzilla instance goes down, simply log in with your regular credentials on another instance and continue where you left off.@jupiter_rowland
