Gizmodo just recommended "6 Musk-Free Twitter Alternatives".Of course, Mastodon made the list. They also mentioned that Mastodon is the social network that's gained the most traction.Which is true. Mastodon is about to hit 11 million accounts this week. The Fediverse itself is bigger. In fact Mastodon isn't even the fastest growing Fediverse service. That honour goes to Misskey, which has doubled in size over the past month.https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2023/04/best-twitter-alternatives/@fediversenews

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Will Misskey and Mastodon users be able to follow each other at some point? I'm interested in new platforms but have no desire to move again. That's assuming we can't already - I created a new Bookwyrm account because I didn't realise Mastodon could link to it.

@kennykravitz They can follow each other already today. Just like you can follow users of any ActivityPub micro/macro-blog service, such as Misskey, Calckey, Friendica, Pleroma, Akkoma, GoToSocial, Hubzilla etc.Following other types of ActivityPub accounts can be a hit and miss at times, but I have been able to follow Bookwyrm accounts, Pixelfed accounts, PeerTube accounts etc.@atomicpoet

@mathias @atomicpoet So the dream of platform-agnostic social media is basically already here? Excellent. And I've just found my own Bookwyrm account 🤦

@Kenny Kravitz What if I told you that you've just replied to someone on Friendica? And that this comment of mine comes from Hubzilla? And that both are not only not Mastodon, but older than Mastodon and still connected to Mastodon and to each other?@Mathias Hellquist (Friendica)

@jupiter_rowland @mathias Forgive the noob question, but is there any way to migrate or clone my entire Mastodon account on this server instance, to elsewhere on the fediverse? Including content?I've been wanting to have several "mirrors" for some time, so that my account can't be taken down. Remember when Wikileaks was under concerted DDOS attack, and so simply cloned itself all over the web? Something like that.

@BarrenPlanet No. Not with content. You'd lose content, bookmarks, hashtag follows and lists. Also, you can't migrate your followers with you. This is a security feature of the Fediverse that I think all the services abide to, as each user should actively opt-in on who they follow, and where. You can migrate those you follow with you to your new instance, but if you truly do a migrate that will disable your old account. If you do a migrate all your followers will be notified of your migration/move, and will be offered (automatically) to follow you on your new account.I would recommend you set up accounts on the instances/services you'd like to try out, export the list of those you follow and import that list on the new instance/service. To those you follow you will appear twice (or more, if you've done more) in their followers list as each account you have will be separate from each other (this is a thing I've been ranting about elsewhere that I'd like: a Fediverse identity provider (IDP) service...but as I can't really explain how it should work properly I can't complain too hard on it not existing, hehe). The only way to get what you ask for is to migrate to Hubzilla (with the above drawbacks, but once only). If you are on Hubzilla you can then log in on any other Hubzilla instance and it will "all be there", which includes content, contacts etc. If your main Hubzilla instance goes down, simply log in with your regular credentials on another instance and continue where you left off.@jupiter_rowland

@mathias @jupiter_rowland Thanks. An admin of a popular instance on Masto suddenly decided to quit, leaving thousands of users homeless, and it's been bugging me for a while that something similar could happen with any server instance on Masto. It does sound like Hubzilla avoids this problem. I'll check it out. 👍

@Probably Paul 🌍 I was just about to say: Only Hubzilla, (streams) and the officially-pronounced-dead projects in-between have nomadic identity. But I wouldn't necessarily let a complete Mastodon newbie loose on Hubzilla which even Friendica users find not exactly easy to use despite being a Friendica fork. And while (streams) is slimmed down from Hubzilla and not as overwhelming, it has an aura of being experimental, and it has never been intended as an enclosed, all-in-one, ready-to-use social platform. But I guess there's no stopping you anymore...Oh, if you do join Hubzilla, don't forget to go to the apps section and activate the ActivityPub connector named Pubcrawl.

@jupiter_rowland Hey, I'm a Linux aficionado, I'm used to devs prioritizing the functionality over slick UIs. Even a command line terminal is usually fine by me.Thanks for your help.
