@anders @TfTHacker @AnthonyBaker My vault-du-jour has only 2000 notes in it after this year’s pruning. I’ve had vaults with up to 5,000 that felt spry.Re: discoverability - I don’t have a video on that (but maybe should!). Currently, system working for me entails making sure all new notes have at least three connections (via tagging or linking), regularly revisiting and fleshing out random notes to rediscover old material, and the Strange New Worlds plugin.

@anders @TfTHacker @AnthonyBaker It varies. I prefer atomic notes. Half of my notes represent one thought, but someone of these also include links, associations, etc. I have note types for Sources (like bibliography entries, with a summary and reading notes, which might later be atomized), Dreams (dream journal), Journals (Daily Notes), and Documents (things I’m writing). All of these are whatever the opposite of atomic is, but might spawn atomic notes later.

Will you help me with something? Who is a self-published indie author who is, in your opinion, doing everything (or mostly everything) right?I’m not asking so I can copy them — that would be inauthentic and to “best practice-y.” But I am curious about those who seem to be doing the self-publishing thing very well. I also love to know about LGBTQ+ folks in this space. And if you’re actually one of these folks finding success, please introduce yourself! #selfpublishing #indieauthor #LGBTQ

Before leaving on our current trip, I created pages in #Obsidian for each place we would visit. I created a template called “Destination” and, using the new properties feature, set up a way to tag each Destination I create from that template with nation, province, and city names. I also came up with a new property — Visited — that can be checked if we’ve been there before, left unchecked if not. Page sections include Itinerary (final notes) and Research (fleeting notes). It’s working well!

I’m still playing with the best way to work with the sights and restaurants for each destination. Currently, I lean toward a more atomic method: a note for each sight or restaurant that contains all the relevant details, with a link to this detailed page in the itinerary note. This gives me a lot of flexibility, because I can quickly shuffle these pages to different dates on the fly as my itinerary evolves … even in real time.

Once a destination page exists, I link to it from the Daily Note associated with the date we’ll be there. I also maintain a note for a given journey — in this case, “Transatlantic August 2023” — with an itinerary populated with links to the appropriate Daily Notes and destination files for quick reference. These “trip notes” get filed in a folder called Travel Planners to make ‘em easy to get to … and are then transferred to Archives for long-term storage and future reference.

And now, of course, I’m thinking of how to integrate all this into either a travel-planning #kanban board (with embedded links) … or, perhaps even better, an #Obsidian canvas that works like a mind map of an entire trip, with the trip name in the center … days that branch out from there, destinations linked to days, and points of interest or restaurants that branch out from a given destination. I like the idea of seeing an entire trip laid out this way. #PKM #travel #WeirdIdeasOfMine

Good morning from Ireland! Past Mark pre-populated today’s Daily Note with all the facts about our trip to Cork today. Getting up to rediscover that fact this morning was like getting a sweet little present from Past Self to Present Self. Thanks, Past Mark. 🙏🥰😍#PKM #Obsidian #PKMPresentsAreTheBest

Still fiddling with #Heptabase, which went 1.0 today. It’s expensive, VC-funded, with your content in the cloud — in other words, it’s sort of the anti-#Obsidian.What I do like so far? This little video. There is no yammering narration. Instead, it’s just a screen capture of a Heptabase user slowly and patiently working atomizing and arranging his or her notes from a book. I’d love to see more videos like these for more of our #PKM tools: just looking over the shoulder of a user.

Here’s how Mastodon works for me: a few weeks ago, an acquaintance here mentioned the #Hobonichi #Techo day planner. It caught my fancy, so I ordered a 2023 English version from Amazon … and loved it. Now, I’ve integrated it into my planning and #PKM flow. And while traveling, I got to buy my 2024 #Techo right from the flagship store here in Tokyo! A passion I didn’t know I had, mentioned by a Mastodon friend, led me to an adventure I would have otherwise missed. I’m grateful!

Dan Blank’s Substack post on finding a way to do social media that feels natural and authentic to YOU really resonates with me.For me, #Mastodon is the first online space since the very early days of Twitter that has felt, from day one of my time here, like a place where I could just be me. No strategies. No attempts to game the system. No automated or scheduled posts ... just sharing ideas and connecting with real people. Smaller? Yes. Better? Yes. https://danblank.substack.com/p/your-social-media-reset-why-smaller

@anders For most people, the iPad Air is the best choice: light, fast, powerful. You can take it anywhere without thinking about it, and it works with the Apple Pencil Gen 2. *IF* you need an ultra-high-quality video monitor OR the ability to output to an external pro-level display on a regular basis, OR you edit video and audio on an iPad, then the iPad Pro is a good choice. But very few people need this.

@anders Glad to help! For ages, I bought the iPad Pro, well, because I liked feeling like a pro. In the end, I never used any of its Pro features! I think you’ll really enjoy the Air.

@bengillam I think part of this has to do with the fact that:A) intermediate applications of #ObsidianMD tend to evolve out of personal problem solving, and are therefore less likely to be showcased andB) for many people, the basics (with tweaks to structure or differences in how and when they're applied) prove to be enough to meet their future needs. Later stuff by Bryan Jenks and certain presentations (dataview!) by @nicole certainly qualify as more advanced.

Friends, word reached me this morning that William Whittaker — a good friend, a faithful husband to his partner of 50 years, the inspiration for “Ed” in #ParallelLines, and half of the couple to whom that novel is dedicated — has passed away. I’m broken-hearted, particularly for Matthew, Will’s husband for half a century. The best of Ed — the faith, the humor, the ability to love others so fully — is rooted William. If you love Ed, you would have loved Will. 💔#WritingCommunity

Amazed to hear a writing guru/podcaster rave about how much better Twitter has become lately, claiming engagement was up and membership was skyrocketing over the past year.In his next episode, he proudly introduced a guest whose reputation seems based on having written a fiction series designed to indoctrinate kids into far-right political ideology. I suppose Twitter *is* better for some folks these days. As for me: it’s never been easier to unfollow a podcast.
