Before leaving on our current trip, I created pages in #Obsidian for each place we would visit. I created a template called “Destination” and, using the new properties feature, set up a way to tag each Destination I create from that template with nation, province, and city names. I also came up with a new property — Visited — that can be checked if we’ve been there before, left unchecked if not. Page sections include Itinerary (final notes) and Research (fleeting notes). It’s working well!

I’m still playing with the best way to work with the sights and restaurants for each destination. Currently, I lean toward a more atomic method: a note for each sight or restaurant that contains all the relevant details, with a link to this detailed page in the itinerary note. This gives me a lot of flexibility, because I can quickly shuffle these pages to different dates on the fly as my itinerary evolves … even in real time.

@markmcelroy Atomic sounds like the best approach both now and for future use, as one day you might want to refer to a subset of the places you visited. You could use Properties/tags to link them.Would like to see the finished Canvas sometime, it will surely be a thing of beauty!

Once a destination page exists, I link to it from the Daily Note associated with the date we’ll be there. I also maintain a note for a given journey — in this case, “Transatlantic August 2023” — with an itinerary populated with links to the appropriate Daily Notes and destination files for quick reference. These “trip notes” get filed in a folder called Travel Planners to make ‘em easy to get to … and are then transferred to Archives for long-term storage and future reference.

@ellane @markmcelroy I would also create a new property for the atomics. Like Location, linking them back to the “geographical” notes. Perhaps also go with a Type property for “Restaurant”, “Museum”, etc.

And now, of course, I’m thinking of how to integrate all this into either a travel-planning #kanban board (with embedded links) … or, perhaps even better, an #Obsidian canvas that works like a mind map of an entire trip, with the trip name in the center … days that branch out from there, destinations linked to days, and points of interest or restaurants that branch out from a given destination. I like the idea of seeing an entire trip laid out this way. #PKM #travel #WeirdIdeasOfMine
