@kravietz Am I right in thinking there's not a browser yet?

@kravietz :) It's progress to have a browser. Some would say it's a vital app.#riscv@anahata

@ulintl I've been saying for a while that Intel are going to need to look to RISC-V if it wants to stay in the processor business... I don't know whether they really need SiFive's expertise to do that though, or whether the $2B is for some already developed design that either threatens Intel further, or would give them an advantage in the market.

@thor It's not a question of being understood... It's more about feeling alienated politically... I don't want to be associated with the Right Wing politics of the Little Englander.

@thor I guess centrist politics has the quality that it pisses everyone off equally! ;)

@thor I think it make more sense, administratively, for there to be a unified Ireland (or an Independent Northern Ireland) - but I guess that's a matter for the people of Northern Ireland to decide for themselves. As I understand it; a united Ireland has gained popularity as an idea since the UK left the EU.

@thor Well... there's the thorny issue of Protestant tribalism vs. Catholic tribalism as well, of course. :/

I dunno, @ulintl I don't really see much of a difference between Intel and SiFive's business practice. How much of SiFive's output has been #opensource to date?But neither do I see #RISCV being silenced by Intel buying SiFive. SiFive have sold a billion cores to date. Andes Technology have sold 7 Billion. And then there's Codasip, Bluespec, Espressif and Cortus among lots of others too...In the end it might come down to Governments and universities to insist on open source chips.

@ulintl SiFive seems to be the company that people see as predominant, because it was set up by the guys who developed #RISCV, but Andes Technology have sold 7 times as many chips and the XuanTie 910 is a powerful chip from T-Head.I share your worry that Intel will corrupt RISC-V to their will by developing proprietary modules, and then through scale, they'll oblige everyone to use their closed source chips.There are going to be Open Hardware alternatives though, I'm sure of it.

@ulintl Actually... What Intel will probably feel is an imperative to keep their Enterprise customers, is an X86 to #RISCV translation layer akin to Apple's Rosetta 2.

@thor :) That reminds me of a Terry Pratchett quote:"Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life."Which is a take on a W B Yeats quote:"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."Which is itself a take on Plutarch's"The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled."

@ulintl It's always a hardware / software tandem in tech. And one grows as the other does. Canonical now sees #RISCV potential, so it hops on board... quite a way down the road from Debian and Fedora, though.

@strypey Wasn't it forked simply because some people didn't like the name? (Some open source apps do have some strange names. Krita is another one.)Obviously, the acronym GIMP doesn't bother the majority of users sufficiently to jump over to Glimpse...
