@freemo @mike805 but it could be ancestral land for the ethnicity, even if there was no kingdom. Both terms are quite different from how they were intended thousands of years ago, anyway.

@freemo @mike805 they have the advantage (in this context, in others it's their greatest weakness) of having religion coinciding with ethnicity. In fact, both for Arabs and Jews, religion is a stronger identity than ethnicity in that region, or the powers that be want us to think so.

@ChrisWilms23 @neilhoskins @helenczerski @davidho In what sense it is a feature? Can anyone between @freemo and @gabipurcaru explain, please? Thank you!

@freemo @ChrisWilms23 @neilhoskins @helenczerski @davidho @gabipurcaru ok, I've just found this one https://git.qoto.org/qoto/qoto/-/commits/qoto/ . I love qoto, but I also find it very important to move on to full-text search. Thus my question: @freemo , could you summarise somewhere an estimate (a bullet list?) of what would it take to merge back from mastodon 4? Is this something that you're willing to do if you get help with development?

@freemo @ChrisWilms23 @helenczerski @davidho @gabipurcaru ok, that's a much better answer than what I hoped for. Problem resolved as much as I'm concerned. As for the issue with Followgraph, this is rather something that I might look into when I find myself with time. If it's only about authentication, not an issue to be implemented. The issue is rather how to run it locally at the user's computer, so that the privacy requirement keeps being satisfied.

@otyugh @bobpony I don't see anything bad in ads per se, as long as they are not intrusive and are actually useful to me as a user. To me this is a valid model to make software sustainable.Having said that, as the sources of your quote indicate, the feature is optional on Ghostery and even when enabled by users, it does not send your data to their servers.

@otyugh @bobpony because I've lived in a totalitarian country where ads were limited to state-sponsored ones. Anyway, I am probably more willing to discern between different types of ads than you are. To me pushing information to the public through mass media is a valid means of awareness development and discussion (for people that wouldn't bother to show interest in a topic themselves). Then there is also door to door marketing for which I also see valid uses and alternative ways to keep it ethical. Sorry for sliding too much away from the topic

@bontchev strange that someone with history in technology would be so naive about occasional predictions of local consequences of events that have been globally reaffirmed on multiple levels. The temperature spiral is going to unprecedented territory, wildfires are reaching new highs, ocean life is being wiped and you complain that Europe got scientists off-guard by not being such an extreme outlier as some thought. This could be the new definition of whataboutism.

@bontchev so you do claim that average temperatures are not peaking? Or do you just entertain yourself by refuting individual datapoints mounting towards a conclusion that you accept (other than it being widely agreed upon)?

@bontchev first part sounds convincing. Second part really makes me think we should talk about how each of us think human knowledge emerges (epistemology) and not climate or data. I don't even know where to start. Clearly oversimplifying, if we have a bunch of numbers, why can't we take their average?

@bontchev @kravietz let's be clear: the models have been verified and that's why there are daily short-term forecasts on pretty much any news program in the world. Precision falls for longer-term, but they are still surprisingly accurate for the month-ahead.Anyway, what you're putting in question not predictive models, but past measurements. Then talking of models is just whataboutism, as I said before

Apparently just these days Google have discovered web search. To use it, I had to dig into other search results and click on "Web"https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/14/24074314/google-now-offers-web-searchThis is why I use https://duckduckgo.com instead.

@Zergling_man @freeschool from what I read on Wikipedia, ecosia seems to be bing seen through a green window? Not my idea of an alternative, not my idea of being energy neutral.
