@darnell @jesuisatire The key point is that 'proxy war' is a term used by the Kremlin and their apologists to attribute blame to the west for what is happening.America is no more fighting a proxy war than is Poland, Estonia or Finland.The western policy with Ukraine has always been to offer mutually beneficial trade deals and help in fighting corruption. Putin decided to start a war over it because he has no attractive EU equivalent to offer Ukraine and they rejected him./1

Up until recently the policy of the west toward Russia had been to act in the hope that it would become a democratic reliable trading partner - as exemplified by Obama telling Romney he was stuck in the 80s for saying that Russia was our greatest threat./2

It can become too extreme and corrupted in this - as per Iraq and the Bush neocons.The best lens through which to understand #Putin is that he is fundamentally a mafia boss. He is driven by the need for power, respect and loyalty - particularly from people he thinks have disrespected him - i.e. Ukrainians and the west.

@alice @evanengel @mashbooq @kevinrothrock Send them to Eastern European countries where they are needed.But you're right that military spending should be more strategic based on current and future needs.So build more air defense systems, artillery, F16s etc. based on what is needed for the next 10+ years of fighting Russian expansionism.And in the meantime other #NATO countries should strive to closer match US spending in order to fully defend the eastern border of democracy.#Ukraine
