@bazkie@beige.partyOn the other hand, payment processing is complex enough even for medium-sized businesses to be willing to outsource it — so it's hardly surprising 😩

@bazkie@beige.partyI'm currently quite limited in my choices. Being in Russia, I have to rely on my friends to generate card credentials for one-shot payments for me, I mostly stopped buying music and stuff like games and only do it for the bare necessities.Having to go through all this — scripts and trackers on payment pages are not the worst offender 😅But yeah, I think it's all pretty bad these days.

I only started listening to Mick Abrahams' Blodwyn Pig a little more than a month ago, and today I learn that Mick Abrahams passed away on the 19th last December. Damn, everybody dies! 😱

@evgandr@bsd.cafe @stefano@fedihome.stefanomarinelli.itPeople get weird sort of attachment to feral animals — an elderly woman on my block was feeding stay cats living in the basement, and many others were keeping an eye on these cats. One day came a woman who was some sort of volunteer helping stray cats find a new home — she wanted to take our cats to the vet and then put them up for adoption, she has even shown us photos of one of the younger cats she managed to catch earlier — it looked like the cat is in good hands, so when she returned for the others we knew that she meant no harm. But this elderly lady trusted no one and she started chasing the volunteer around, swearing loudly, trying to stop her from catching the cats — that was a very weird "performance", but eventually she's given up and all cats went to animal shelter.

@brettm@swarm.coiloptic.orgHa-ha, I had to use image search myself, but I wasn't sure as I'm not too familiar with the game either — other than it's rather disturbing, I think to those who like the game it might resonate on an even deeper level 😅

@jbowen@mast.hpc.social @robdaemon@hachyderm.ioSometimes Apple devices don't play nicely even with other Apple devices, in 2011 I got myself a 27" Thunderbolt Display and a 17" MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt port — at the time both were nice and shiny, and on paper the idea looked really cool — instead of plugging lots of cables into your laptop, you had only one, well — and another one for power, but still not so bad, it was almost like a dock ThinkPads (and business lines of other brands) had, but MacBooks lacked. In reality however it wasn't so cool — on waking up from sleep, your MacBook could "lose" display connection: the built-in display worked, the devices plugged into the external display worked — but you couldn't use it, well… as display. There was no "software" way to fix it, the most obvious fix was re-plugging the Thunderbolt cable, but you could have other devices using the connection: you could have USB devices plugged into the display, including external storage, you could be using the wired network connection — so this would most certainly cause other issues. The problem was very annoying! And both were Apple devices running Apple software, with nothing else in the mix to blame. To my knowledge, the problem never got fixed — last I checked, the thread about it on Apple Discussions forum was 50 pages long. With time both devices just became vintage and people moved on — to newer and shinier devices. And that's how things often are with Apple — some things indeed just work, others just don't — but those who just got their first MacBook know nothing about it, most never even use complex setups, for them it's just "My MacBook plays very nicely with my iPhone" — well, duh… it does! 🤷

@bazkie@beige.partyI think it's a very healthy thing to wave back and have fun, but a lot of people — especially here on Fedi, tend to overthink things: "Why would I be waving back? They don't even see me!" or "If others were watching, waving at the TV would make me look stupid" — and they become joyless people instead of enjoying the moment nobody else cares about: there's no one watching them to think they are stupid, and there's no reason to think about whether people on TV can see them, it's for them alone to enjoy — and yet… 😩

@kaixin@snac.bsd.cafe @grahamperrin@bsd.cafeI believe, the important distinction here is that ports are not part of the system and aren't maintained by FreeBSD project, they get submitted by the community (Because no one wants to be associated with XLibre project!).Otherwise it's an "I'd like to interject for a moment" moment 😜

@santi@gone.lema.org @stefano@bsd.cafe @waffles@masto.yttrx.comIsn't it pretty much the norm these days though — even for Intel machines? This ageing Lenovo 2-in-1 is a bit older than M1 Pro MacBook even and bottom/btm here claims it's idling at 3.5–4W. With battery below 60% of its original capacity, it can go on up to 7 hours like that. The display panel here is worse/lower resolution than MacBook Pro — which could be a factor, but it was also a budget model of its time, with "Pentium Gold" CPU — I doubt it's the top dog in terms of power efficiency.
