I already had a short look at this a while back (https://youtu.be/JzazgbL4u6U?t=1131), but I was asked to revisit it recently. And while this is clearly not for me (as you will see in my clumsy attempt to explain and use this distribution at the same time), I admire the thought that went into this. It's not just cool and nerdy – I think it's possible to really get into it and to be more productive while using less RAM.Links: Website: https://sr.ht/~mil/Sxmo/User Guide: https://git.sr.ht/~mil/sxmo-docs/tree/master/USERGUIDE.mdImages: http://images.lrdu.org/pinephone/ (this is sxmo_pinephone-sd.nightly-202011090018.img.xz)Please tell me below or via Twitter (@linmobblog), Mastodon (@linmob@fosstodon.org) or email (sxmo@linmob.net) what interests you with regard to the PinePhone and mobile Linux operating systems: Distributions? While searching for new apps I came across a script [1], that makes it possible to get a current release of PureOS, which Purism develops for the Librem 5, to run on the Pine64 PinePhone.[1]: https://github.com/rufferson/pureos-pinephoneWith calls not working (the modem is not recognized, although that may be my fault as I opted for a newer 5.10 kernel), I focussed on what makes PureOS different from other Phosh distributions. And then I got sidetracked and suddenly shifted to gaming (which I am absolutely terrible at).More SuperTuxKart on PureOS on the PinePhone can be watched here soon: https://devtube.dev-wiki.de/videos/watch/b7cc9c6a-f16d-442e-97b3-a686129f2662Please tell me below or via Twitter (@linmobblog), Mastodon (@linmob@fosstodon.org) or email (hello@linmob.net) what interests you with regard to the PinePhone and mobile Linux operating systems: Distributions? In this video I flashed an SD card inside the Phone (running from eMMC), rebooted into the SD card to then flash the eMMC.Sounds simple, and it is. It just takes a long time.

In this video I try to detail an important part of my ArchLinuxARM setup described in my previous blog post (https://linmob.net/2021/01/09/my-setup-with-danctnix-archlinuxarm.html): The use of Firefox profiles generally and Firefox's SSB feature. I used to use ICE SSB (https://github.com/peppermintos/ice) to initially explore this, but since that helpful program is unfortunately not available for every distribution, I tried to describe the manual way here.I placed my SSB desktop launchers in https://framagit.org/linmobapps/linmobapps.frama.io/-/tree/master/desktop-files/ssb. This is a video for everybody who is receiving a KDE Community Edition these days – if you already have a PinePhone and run Plasma Mobile, you likely will find this video superfluos. This video has chapters to save you some time.I try to show the onboarding process: Taking it out of the box, making it operational by opening the back cover and removing the plastic strip and thenand then getting started by booting the phone, connecting it to WiFi and then upgrading it.Now upgrading takes quite a while, so please be patient and connect you PinePhone to an external power source. After all that I try and show you around Plasma Mobile. Unfortunately, the editing process had to be done in a hurry, so it’s not where I’d like it to be – but it was “publish it like this” or “don’t publish it at all” and I hope to have made the right choice. Apologies for minor glitches! Also watch my other videos on Manjaro Plasma Mobile (which is the distribution that runs here), most notably the previous one:PinePhone: Manjaro Plasma Mobile (soon on the KDE Community Edition) https://devtube.dev-wiki.de/videos/watch/5c73aab1-cb41-4354-81fe-a56a36324806An my unboxings:postmarketOS CE https://devtube.dev-wiki.de/videos/watch/cf23e76c-8aad-4b62-be3f-c8f2838db6e1UBports CE https://devtube.dev-wiki.de/videos/watch/9154dc88-3d5d-468c-a640-cad19f68cea4Please tell me below or via Twitter (@linmobblog), Mastodon (@linmob@fosstodon.org) or email (kdece@linmob.net) what interests you with regard to the PinePhone and mobile Linux operating systems: Distributions? To learn about all its features, look at the release notes: https://forum.sailfishos.org/t/release-notes-koli-4-0-1/4542To install it, you need to jump through some hoops currently:Install it as described on https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php?title=PinePhone_Software_Releases#Sailfish_OS, and then set a root password as shown in the end of the video. @freddylove@distrotoot.com Let me try to it explain it: Long term, companies must sell their products for more than what they cost the company, right? This is especially true for an SPC.Now Purism originally sold these at USD 599 (see: http://web.archive.org/web/20170831231354/https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/). They had, which seems foolish, not even picked the SoC at the time (which turned out to be good though, because who would want this phone with a 32bit ARMv7 CPU now?), and estimated to ship phones in January 2019. Early on, with the development kits, it became clear that they would not be able to make the January 2019 deadine, albeit it wasn't clear that they would it miss it this badly. So they slowly raised the price on preorders, which makes sense: The longer a project takes from when you start it to when you can get revenue (which can be assumed for the point in time when you can sell the product as fast as you mass produce it), the more costly it gets, and you have to adjust the price accordingly.Did the USD 599 price make sense? Yes, it did! Purism would make a device (not a powerhouse by 2017s standards even, but arguably the best you could build by trying to go as FSF-y as possible), they would develop the software, and enthusiasts like me, who had been waiting for a true, open Linux phone ever since OpenMoko went under, where happy to give their money to Purism because the only viable alternative at the time was to hack together an SBC, an LTE Modem, a Display and a battery in a lunchbox and cobble some old, unmaintained software together to run on it.Nowadays, after delays and delays and many PR blunders by Purism, this may seem absurd; especially so since PINE64 hacked an SBC, a LTE Modem, a display and a battery together and sell it as the PinePhone (which I dearly love) at cost with much smaller investments (per sold unit) into software development. Large parts of the user facing software of 3 of the 5 PinePhone Community Editions would not exist without Purism's arguably (seen from a business perspective) stupid decision from 2017 that now manifests as the Librem 5 Evergreen.TL;DR: They just can't sell it at a lower price in order to avoid bankcruptcy.

In this rambly and bad video I finally share some more impressions with the Librem 5 and the next release of PureOS, which is based on Debian 11 “Bullseye” and has the name “Byzantium”.I also go into a massive tangent about AppStream metadata and custom Purism additions that define form factors an app support, which I believe should be more widely adapted.Note that Byzantium is not meant for end-users yet and thus all imperfections that you can see may well be fixed before its release. The part about Megapixels and the camera is to be taken with massive grains of salt, I just compiled the app from repositories at source.puri.sm without knowing too well what I am doing nor asking for help.Links: PureOS images: https://arm01.puri.sm/job/Images/job/Image%20Build/Flashing: https://developer.puri.sm/Librem5/Development_Environment/Boards/HowTo/Flashing_eMMC.htmlSpecify Form-Factors in Your Librem 5 Apps: https://puri.sm/posts/specify-form-factors-in-your-librem-5-apps/getappid.sh https://linmob.net/pinephone-setup-scaling-in-phosh/Purism Stream (YouTube client): https://source.puri.sm/todd/StreamMake sure to check out my blog (https://linmob.net) and the App List (https://linmobapps.frama.io)!Disclosure: I am a co-host on the bi-weekly PineTalk Podcast (https://www.pine64.org/pinetalk), a PINE64 community podcast. Among the things I did not show on video yet was GloDroid, an AOSP port to (not just) the PinePhone. No, you won’t be able to use the PinePhone like an Android phone with this just yet, as nothing Modem related (LTE, mobile data, telephony) works yet.But it might be fun to try, and maybe there is one Android app you need only rarely, but it does not work well enough with Anbox? This video should enable you to have an SD card with GloDroid as a part of your arsenal.Links: Grab the release at https://github.com/GloDroid/glodroid_manifest/releasesInstallation instructions https://github.com/GloDroid/glodroid_manifest#step-1Make sure to check out my blog (https://linmob.net) and the App List (https://linmobapps.frama.io)!Disclosure: I am a co-host on the bi-weekly PineTalk Podcast (https://www.pine64.org/pinetalk), a PINE64 community podcast.
