You know Mobian, but did you know that it can also run on the Purism Librem 5?In this video I demo Mobian on the Librem 5, based on the mobian-librem5-phosh-20210319.img nightly image. The procedure of flashing Mobian to the Librem 5 is described on https://wiki.mobian-project.org/doku.php?id=librem5&s[]=librem5, the specific flash command I used was ./scripts/flash-image --board librem5r4 --dir mobian.Links:Mobian https://www.mobian-project.orgMobian Wiki https://wiki.mobian-project.orgPurism Fund Your App https://puri.sm/fund-your-app/Also check out my blog (https://linmob.net) and the App List (https://linmobapps.frama.io)!Disclosure: I am a co-host on the bi-weekly PineTalk Podcast (https://www.pine64.org/pinetalk), a PINE64 community podcast. This is pro-bono community work and I try my best to make sure that this work does not affect my view on the PINE64 products or competing Linux Phones in any way.Chapters 00:00 Introduction01:22 PineTalk disclosure02:10 First run wizard and troubleshooting05:22 A look at the installed apps12:33 Firefox performance comparison13:25 Upgrading the system13:29 uname -r and WiFi troubles15:01 Testing incoming calls15:38 Conclusions17:53 One more thing: Cawbird (Twitter client)

@linmobnet is #Librem5 compatible with #ManjaroArmLinux? I have the phone but find it horrible... hoping a new OS might make it useable.

@mostly_linux @linmobnet I don't think so. I can recommend trying postmarketOS (see https://linmobapps.frama.io), it has way more mobile-friendly software packaged and you can use Plasma Mobile if Phosh/Gnome on Mobile is not your jam.Unfortunately, battery life isn't better on Mobian or postmarketOS. I am positive that Purism is working hard on improving it, so it will get better eventually.

@mostly_linux @linmobnet Oops, I misplaced the link there, linmobapps is about app availability. The relevant link for postmarketOS is https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Purism_Librem5_(purism-librem5), I recommend taking the pmbootstrap route. pmbootstrap can be easily installed using pip.

@freddylove@distrotoot.com Let me try to it explain it: Long term, companies must sell their products for more than what they cost the company, right? This is especially true for an SPC.Now Purism originally sold these at USD 599 (see: http://web.archive.org/web/20170831231354/https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/). They had, which seems foolish, not even picked the SoC at the time (which turned out to be good though, because who would want this phone with a 32bit ARMv7 CPU now?), and estimated to ship phones in January 2019. Early on, with the development kits, it became clear that they would not be able to make the January 2019 deadine, albeit it wasn't clear that they would it miss it this badly. So they slowly raised the price on preorders, which makes sense: The longer a project takes from when you start it to when you can get revenue (which can be assumed for the point in time when you can sell the product as fast as you mass produce it), the more costly it gets, and you have to adjust the price accordingly.Did the USD 599 price make sense? Yes, it did! Purism would make a device (not a powerhouse by 2017s standards even, but arguably the best you could build by trying to go as FSF-y as possible), they would develop the software, and enthusiasts like me, who had been waiting for a true, open Linux phone ever since OpenMoko went under, where happy to give their money to Purism because the only viable alternative at the time was to hack together an SBC, an LTE Modem, a Display and a battery in a lunchbox and cobble some old, unmaintained software together to run on it.Nowadays, after delays and delays and many PR blunders by Purism, this may seem absurd; especially so since PINE64 hacked an SBC, a LTE Modem, a display and a battery together and sell it as the PinePhone (which I dearly love) at cost with much smaller investments (per sold unit) into software development. Large parts of the user facing software of 3 of the 5 PinePhone Community Editions would not exist without Purism's arguably (seen from a business perspective) stupid decision from 2017 that now manifests as the Librem 5 Evergreen.TL;DR: They just can't sell it at a lower price in order to avoid bankcruptcy.

@linmobnetI get that @linmobnet just cant get behind that price, justified to you or not, i'm not going to pay that as it stands. Just me, but I don't think I am alone. 200 bucks I can get behind for the #PinePhone but still a bit pricey for 2021 specs. Just being realistic here. I love my PP and ofc I consider it worth the 200 for what we can get our hands on atm. Respect.
