@NevadaJack to be fair, I wouldn't've watched Biden's either. He's not my sorta candidate.

@NevadaJack if you're sincerely (without irony) a Trump supporter, then, sir, I feel very sorry for my homeland, and am totally relieved that I now live as far from it as one can be.

@lightweight aft 50 minutes waiting, got an operator... who verified that my return, submitted in March, is still to be process. The long-suffering operator had to inform me that she had no idea when my return would be processed (I'm due a refund). Their systems are pretty hopeless. She can't update my postal address (all IRS communications works via post, and they have an address for met that's a couple years out-of-date) - she suggested I could fax through an address change form... 😜

@strypey the fact that you present a benevolent and thoughtful vision for digital technology is the point, for the same reason that tech innovation often seems to be inspired by science fiction: it's impossible to aim for a result if you don't have a compelling mental image. I think your vision, and you expounding it publicly, is a crucial part of achieving it.

FOSS creates huge opportunities for indigenous communities around the world to ensure the technology they use reflects their unique and precious cultures. Software is a personal and cultural sovereignty issue and deserves a global uprising - in the form of people who desire to learn. We need a new 'enlightenment' with true, deep digital literacy as the goal if we want to achieve a true balance of power. Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Apple and others like them are just digital colonials.

@Andrii I'm assuming that if an un-vaccinated employee contracts COVID and suffers 'long covid' and other future ramifications of having had the full-blown virus, the public system will say "tough -you're on your own". I kinda hope so, to maintain balance. And to help cull the antis-social idiots.

@normandc @mastobikes all of that could be handled with NextCloud + Discourse... including the GPS tracks (I use PhoneTrack) and Doodle Polls (the NC Polls app is functionally equivalent), it also supports photo/video galleries (including auto-upload from mobile devices using the NC syncing app), plus it supports collaboratively editing documents replacing GoogleDocs.. not to mention acting as a Google Drive/Dropbox replacement... I can assist in setting one up...

@normandc @mastobikes plus wrote this (but slightly outdated): https://tech.oeru.org/installing-nextcloud-and-collabora-office-online-docker-ubuntu-1604 - now I deploy OnlyOffice rather than Collabora. It's all #FOSS and free of any license costs. Can be hosted on a $20-$40/month commodity VPS...

@normandc @mastobikes Discourse would be a no-brainer comprehensive Google Groups replacement (NextCloud might offer plenty of functionality - it includes vid conferencing and collaboration around documents) even providing excellent "participate via email" functionality... I can provide help with Discourse - here's some upgrade documentation... https://tech.oeru.org/upgrading-docker-based-discourse-forum-instance

@normandc @mastobikes fwiw, I'm a committed cycling advocate :) - my company set up the original https://spokes.org.nz and https://can.org.nz sites (not the current versions - that was a decade ago)... you can find the originals on https://archive.org :)

@nicemicro @normandc @mastobikes I'd have to check again, but I'm pretty sure I've used the OnlyOffice on Android - and I think there might even be a mobile version of it.

@nicemicro @normandc @mastobikes it might be an issue with the Apple App store - they're no fans of #FOSS. Apple's 30% cut of $0 is $0.

@avarowell I know quite a few. The designers at the #FOSS dev company I ran for 14 years never used anything but superb FOSS tools like #Inkscape, #Gimp, #Blender, & #Scribus. I sold that company 10 yrs ago & the FOSS tools are much better today. Things like Krita plus video (#KDEnlive, #OpenShot, #OBS) & audio (#Ardour) editing have got way better. They're all easily installed with https://ubuntustudio.org - it's an amazing resource for artists of all sorts.

@avarowell UbuntuStudio has recently adopted the KDE Desktop which made it far more compelling to me than it was (when it used XFCE)... and the app suite is constantly improving at a surprising rate.

There are no longer any defensible reasons for using any Microsoft products. The alternatives are better and lower cost, and the Microsoft stuff is just finding innovative new ways to suck rocks.
