Wondering how many people use an 'IP Geolocation' extension in their browser to tell them *where* websites they visit are actually hosted... I use "Country Flag & IP Whois" for (Fire|Water)Fox which, for example, shows me which Aotearoa NZ civil society organisations, gov't agencies, & political parties host their websites onshore... It's quite telling.

@TheConversationUS what "'AI' boom"? It's manufactured and fake.

@alexmdunne hah, didn't know you're following Leo and friends, too! Been a die-hard supporter for years now. Very cool.

@mike hah, I had pretty much the exact same experience here in Ōtautahi (Christchurch), NZ... I charge it up periodically to see if things have changed...

@alexmdunne it's a 110 year old Bristolian Gaff Cutter 😉 which won the 1927 Fastnet race, and is heading back to contest the 2027 Fastnet on the centenary of its previous victory!

@alexmdunne nice. My dad and I watched them together (from afar) every 2 weeks for several years until he died in 2024.

@alexmdunne ah, I see - *you* were the one restoring the 50yo PNW cruiser - my bad.

@alexmdunne thanks. It was a craftsmanship phenomenon, how Leo did stuff, right up our mutual (my pop's and mine) alley. Great to hear it blows your hair back as well 😉

@alexmdunne yep. That was impressive - Leo 'does shit right'. No corners cut. Inspirational. And his videography is stunning. He even used an original song by a mate of mine (a muso & keen sailor) here in Ōtautahi in a video.

@alexmdunne his cast of characters was also pretty delightful, along with all their 'in jokes' (like Pete's legs, Nick's hair, and Paddy's dresses, etc.). And, of course, Pancho (Ms.).

@jackyan doh! Hope you manage to give it the slip before it sets in! My whole family came down with a flu (very snotty, coughing, fever) as we were finishing the Milford Track a few days ago... Assuming we came in contact with it before the tramp, but yeah, a bit of an annoying surprise.

Last week, tramping the Milford Track with my whānau (it was stunning), I ended up chatting with a lone fellow tramper from Switzerland. Got to practice my German quite a lot... turns out he's a recently retired heart surgeon, who primarily did heart transplants. 😲 Turns out he wants nothing more to do with his profession & is very pessimistic about the EU social situation heading rightward. He finds Aotearoa magical & inspiring & is busy doing as many Great Walks as he possibly can.

EU's digital sovereignty situation: very grim... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJyILvhEFTk Thankfully, the EU is *very tardily - like by 20 years* slowly recognising its complete dependence on US #BigTech. Wonder when Aotearoa NZ and AU will have the same epiphany?

@jackyan hope you're able to recover quickly! Yeah, we were lucky the flu didn't set in while we were in the thick of the tramp! Can't work out how we all got exposed (we were with another family over the past couple weeks, and they didn't seem to get it at all)...

@QueerMatters some, like the three I run, are moderated by folks very well aware of Popper's 'Paradox of Tolerance' from his 'Open Societies and there Enemies', and who do not tolerate intolerance.
