@rms -- looking for a coherent "no state" solution to the Israel/ Palestine conflict from the left. Our sympathies and solidarity should be with everyday Israelis and Palestinians that have to endure state-sponsored terrorism from both sides of this conflict. I hate that most people are painted into a corner of Zionism if you condemn Hamas. Or anti-Semitism if you condemn Israel. Governments on both sides of those imaginary lines deserve to be tossed out.

@BrodieOnLinux -- voted yes on this. Not that I don't think FOSS developers shouldn't have the opportunity to get paid. But because I think that having direct donate links in software is a can of worms. Each app in gnome may have dozens of contributors. Who gets paid? Will each app have it's own account or Bitcoin wallet address? Who manages that? What about apps that are boring, but critically important (files, calculator....)? Etc.

@stefano -- Linux on the laptops. FreeBSD on the servers.

@stefano -- I could get everything working on my old 8 gig MBP (2010) with FreeBSD. The mouse touchpad works, but not using the atp driver. Gotta swap it out. Also, wireless is a no go. Broadcom. Yuck. Wired Ethernet jack works flawlessly. Have a little USB wifi dongle for my raspberry pi's that works out of the box. For old hardware, the MBP is a beast. Weighs a ton. Heavy aluminum casing. Don't make them like that anymore.

@hn50 -- kinda sad. A Nature publication can make an academic career. Can a retraction equally break it? #academia

@hn50 is it an answer to redhat's openshift? Rancher? But... you must use snaps... and run Ubuntu core.

@vermaden -- #jails are more efficient and configurable than Docker et al. But they aren't as easy to spin up and share (yet). I work with devops folks and 90% of them have never heard of FreeBSD/jails. They think I'm real-weird for my fascination with #BSD. The few people that have heard of jails think it takes too much to administer them. I get a bit of "containers should be cattle [docker], not pets [jails]". I say keep calm, continue on. Where it matters, BSD and jails are the better choice.

@hn50 -- haven't followed Argentina's politics all that closely. javier milei's talk of implementing extreme austerity and abolishing the central bank in the middle of a runaway inflation should give you pause. Austerity? I mean, I guess. But slashing all social services when 40% of the country is below the poverty line? Yikes.

@rms -- "...cause fossil fuel use to fall 82% between 2021 and 2050... grow ... wind, solar, and other renewables, which would nearly triple from 22% of U.S. electricity generation ... to 92% in 2050." To the tune of 6-800 billion $. This is significant, but it's going to be a real race to try to implement. Particularly since we have already blown past the 2 deg 'catastrophy' metric in 2023, not 2040 [1]. 1.https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2022EF003330

@stefano had to Google it. Wonder if this could be used for diskless setups or netboot-ing a cluster. https://github.com/mmatuska/mfsbsd

@aral I tend to think of politics as something you "participate in" if you are rich and "something that is done to you" if you are poor. It's a question of agency.

@hn50 #Intel is working on a modular laptop with components that look a lot like the #Framework mainboards. Most of the chips are produced outside of the United States. Peddle faster, Intel. @lattera In Colorado, it's an obligation. I've never seen so many people "drive it like they stole it" anywhere else.

@Gina there are two offerings related to this : "LLM Twins" and "LLM CoPilots". Devs can fetch pre-trained LLMs and fine-tune / augment them with local data. Stuff like samples of your personal writing, emails, work text messages, social media posts, etc. You basically teach the LLM to generate content that you write. You can automate it so it literally posts things to social media and responds to emails (agents), or you can manually ask it to generate content. Can ask ChatGPT about both.
