I'll never stop emphasizing how underrated mfsBSD is and how convenient it can be.This morning, I had to set up a FreeBSD server on an OVH machine. The remote console wasn't cooperating when trying to attach an ISO, and it was performing poorly (I'll open a ticket about it when I find the time). Thanks to mfsBSD, I swiftly installed FreeBSD 13.2, but when I attempted to upgrade to 14.0 and update ZFS, it wouldn't boot anymore. In just five minutes, I prepared an mfsBSD image with FreeBSD 14.0 (not yet available on the official site) and got everything up and running. Such a handy tool that has saved me from unpleasant situations countless times. #mfsBSD #FreeBSD #ZFS #ServerSetup #SysAdmin

@stefano What was the problem with the upgrade?

@iasen_kostov i haven't had the time to debug it, as I needed to finish with the setup in a couple of hours. Looks like something related to the new zpool and EFI boot - but another couple of servers tested didn't show this behaviour so I'm not sure. As I have other similar setups, I'll try with another one. For now, I'll be careful with upgrading the zpools.

@stefano That's scary 😬 Never had problems so far. I hope you find the culprit.

@iasen_kostov Yes, it is. But it's a single episode, I've updated other servers and had no problems.I'll keep investigating...

@stefano did you install the new bootloader in all partitions? I remember mirror/raidz setups where that had to be upgraded in all partitions of the mirror/raidz

@stefano @iasen_kostov There’s something regarding manually copying boot loaders when using EFI and ZFS before upgrading the pool in the release notes. However, the instructions are incomplete/vague. Errata is empty. Sadly pretty careless for something that can break your system boot.

@herrbischoff @stefano @iasen_kostov I'd say these instructions are very complete and clear 🤷‍♂️ They cover every edge case, maybe they could mention that in the common case (single boot system and no specific boot configuration), it's *much* simpler as there's typically just one single file on your EFI partition, the default bootloader, like in this example here on some aarch64 machine.

@stefano had to Google it. Wonder if this could be used for diskless setups or netboot-ing a cluster. https://github.com/mmatuska/mfsbsd

@kta @stefano I used that one to create SoloBSD. You can run a FreeBSD system that runs on RAM, no need to install.

@yianiris In FreeBSD, there's UFS. In Linux, there's btrfs - I've been using (and am still using) it, but I've recently unexpectedly lost some (unimportant) data. I'm keeping an eye on Hammer2 (from DragonFlyBSD) - but apart from some tests, I haven't used it much.

I am leaning towards proper use of xfs (ext. journaling) and raid for valuable data.@stefano
