And yes, I suppose that ActivityPub as possible to use as communication protocol/data format in a peer-to-peer environment. But if "real" data transport will be some p2p tech, then it would be not so "http-compliant" in some details, like actor id or entity id or some urls will be like p2p://people/1234567890abcdef or p2p://data/by_sha256/12345678 which can not be directly used across fediverse, esp. without some https bridge like ipfs[dot]io

@FourOh-LLC @silverpill @matthew Why to federate with the _all_ internet, if question was about federation between a single cleartext instance and a single not_cleartext instance? If some instance would try to communicate with an onion service, it at least know what onion is (to extent enough to send a request to a hidden service)...

@FourOh-LLC @silverpill @cjd @matthew "bypassing IP routing, totally ignoring DNS, and absolutely annihilating HTTP"Well, GnuNet is another thing able to do a lot of useful things (it has own DNS at least).Regarding http - if http is dead in current context, it will be replaced with proprietary protocols by e. g. Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Amazon. Result? Censorship at protocol level, and corporate overlords decide what sites you have access to.

@FourOh-LLC @silverpill @cjd @matthew Yes, you are correct, considering how I got confused about some concepts you mention.

@FourOh-LLC @silverpill @cjd @matthew Well, "You cannot shut that down, ... You cannot mute it or make it go away. " - I can't and don't want to. Who at least want to do so are some state actors such as dictatorships. And they known to have advanced capabilities and instruments - from repressive laws to brute force.I spent decades inside ruzzia and seen how it degraded into an electoral dictatorship step by step, and it affects on what i concern about and what not.

@FourOh-LLC @silverpill @cjd @matthew I would object only about "Russia - Criminal Underground" - communists are rule there since 1917. They relaxed the grip there for some time during 1990s, but quickly regrouped and regained power in 1999. KGB is a bureaucratic sect, which worship some occult BS (why else they placed Lenin mummy in the mausoleum at the middle of Red Square?) and it is worse than any "criminal underground".

@FourOh-LLC @silverpill @matthew Here is info about Zot/6, https://opennomad.net/page/nomad/zot6and it speaks about https all the time in context of location(s) bound to identity, and also in context of keys discovery and retrieval by keyId to verify the identity...in context of p2p it would require full refactor of transport and keyId resolution/format spec for zot/6 too.Meanwhile, the message format (serialization) for Zot/6 is ActivityStreams (JSON-LD) too, but this beyond the scope.

@futurebird Sadly there are situations when renting a room is single way to save own sanity so this `sin` is not so avoidable as it seems at first glance. So one of pillars of new religion would be solution for housing crisis. And another thing... using "Christianity" even in name cuts plenty of people away - from Muslims to Pagans & Animists. (I aware that this is said in US "Christianity-centric context", but...)

I thinking about one thing that #fediverse self-hosting landscape lacks. Well it is not only about Fediverse per se.I dream to have something like a personal "trailer", or technically speaking, a server, on the internet, where I can add various capabilities if need them. For example:📜 microblogging like Mastodon.📖 Long-reads blogging like Medium🖼️ Photos and albums📷 Video uploadat least one of these:📬 deltachat relay📪 Briar "mailbox".💬 Simplex relaySome more explanations follow.🧵

And one of key things I want about that is ability to configure it all either via desktop app or via admin UI.I also think about keep using the domain I have. But if it will be https-for-static-ip-address, it is ok.Some can say that it is resemble mix of hubzilla and Small Web & Kitten by @aral I wonder how it would possible to combine Kitten https://kitten.small-web.org and #activityPub which means site does a lot of stuff behind the scenes like sending & receiving plenty of requests.

And i thought about some UI - either desktop app or admin UI to be used to edit content there, view comments/reactions and respond...But the thing I have in my head seems to becoming something grandiose. And all that, to some extent, to avoid to self-host Mastodon, Ghost, Pixelfed, PeerTube at various subdomains across "fleet of virtual machines", otherwise it would be not a Place in context of Kitten but more like "corporate Kubernetes cluster use case".

@aral @yunohost Thanks you both for replies.I just may be got confused, because each of these fediverse apps designed not as a "plugins" for some foundation like Kitten, such e. g. long-reads/blog authoring for it, or photo gallery feature for Kitten, which would share identity. So I want be kote@example.tld in all of these "plugins" and across Fediverse. These isolated apps at best would live at blog.example.tld, photos.example.tld, news.example.tld and im.example.tld domains set.🧵

@aral @yunohost I think it would be interesting to connect your features to each other, by adding Kitten to software that would be installed on/with YunoHost, but of course it would need first to create Kitten-based software ("plugins?") with all these functionalities I would like to have together, aimed at single-person usage.

@strypey @khm As I see Cory Doctorow explianed it better. Basically, there is no law on communication software to be interoperable. If there was such law for software with like 100K+ monthly active people "aboard" to be interoperable with any other such software, with penalties for not doing so, it would become more lucrative for these chat/collaboration software to be interoperable via 1-3 protocols used by everyone for "federated" communication.1/2

@davidrevoy There is a saying that if you want to send some useless helper away forever, you should ask them to weave rope from the sand.

@JeremyMallin Some stuff like cloudflare is a thing that we normally don't need at all, neither as public nor private, as cloudflare. The mere existence of cloudflare is reslt of the fearmongering people of imminent DDoS attack towards their blog/cafe menu/butcher shop/tai chi school website.Yes, ddos attacks can happen sometimes, but should be less centralized site-specific ways to protect self for those who faced this on in group of the risk: activists, vulnerable people communities, etc.

Speaking about #decentralization and Mastodon, does Mastodon official client onboarding flow still promote the "mastodon.social" or other single server as default option instead of rotating/randomizing across the list of known servers with option to type server manually? Without this #Mastodon will have to "block Missisipi" too eventually. Yes, I referring to that decision of #Bluesky to block access to bluesky web UI from IP addresses in Missisipi US state due age-check laws adopted there.
