Crafted Emacs, Doom Emacs, all these Emacs configs floating around… I understand the appeal: people want a polished editor. But here's what I liked about Emacs when I got started: I got do the final polish. Emacs was lacking features (back then, global font lock was disabled, for example: no colours!) – and so I was goaded into learning a little Lisp. And then a bit more. And Emacs was mine. I polished my own Emacs. Taking an already polished Emacs, removing features, or replacing features, that's just not the same experience.I know this is not how most products work. It is, however, how extensions of the cyborg self should work. Not everything can take that role, for sure. I don't want to finish my chair, nor finish my house. But some people do. I like to make my own coffee. The act of finishing a thing, of applying your own aesthetic judgement, that is what makes things your own.#emacs

SOL INVICTVS!If you live in the north where days are short, in any case. Here's to hoping that the days grow longer, the sun rises higher and our mood improves. I could use some sunshine in my heart…☀️ 🤝 ❤️

It’s January 1, the sun is out and we have 15°C. I think it’s the Föhn – warm wind from the south, coming down from the Alps and warming up as it descends, having rained upon the southern slopes. @moss

I really hate geoblocking. First they fuck us all with their globalization shit and then they don’t let us look and listen to stuff across the border. The companies of course sell across borders and maybe they pay taxes for this and maybe they don’t. They also limit their licenses to countries, so dutifully, the shit is geoblocked. As if the German tax payer, the British tax payer, the Swiss tax payer wanted to say: “we paid for this shit and you’re not going to leech off of us, you greedy neighbors! Pay up or shut up!” But that’s not how I feel. If I paid for it, for the love of god, please share it as widely as possible. Let the people across the border at least look at the videos and listen to the music. Geoblocking makes us all complicit in this greed scheme. And even if you don’t feel this shame burning in your heart, as soon as you cross the border and realize that you can’t listen to your state-sponsored podcast anymore, or watch those state-sponsored shows, you become the victim of your own short sightedness. All shall be punished, indeed. I hate this selective globalization: money crosses borders effortlessly but people don’t, goods cross borders but licenses don’t. It’s not that I don’t understand how it came to be this way. I hate how it is this way and wish we’d change it. There is something broken about the world we built and I’d like it to change without knowing how. Perhaps all state sponsored media negotiations should include (mandate!) a provision that the result is cleared for worldwide distribution. And then we’d need to pressure the licensors to stop charging more as if global media consumption were an alien thing that is barely conceivable.« Dieses Video kann leider nicht abgespielt werden. Wir bitten um Ihr Verständnis. Wichtig: Inhalte mit Geoblocking können nur von Deutschland aus abgerufen werden. »

You probably remember the thing I post every few years about most people being unable to use computers. Today I saw "The science of cycology: Failures to understand how everyday objects work" (2006). I don't know what to say. I need to relearn my relationship with other humans, I think. I'm starting to feel strangely disconnected. Or perhaps I'm simply overestimating the importance of understanding bicycles, or the ability to draw sketches that make sense. I feel like there's a gap between me and so many people that is becoming increasingly harder to bridge.https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.3758/BF03195929.pdfvia https://www.scattered-thoughts.net/writing/things-unlearned/via https://www.scattered-thoughts.net/writing/reflections-on-a-decade-of-coding/

@penguin42 Yeah, true. The context of the paper is interesting: the hypothesis it is trying to disprove as far as I understand it is: People use causal explanations to understand the world. The experiment is just another nail in the coffin, suggesting that motor patterns and similarities might be a lot more important and that we're deluding ourselves if we think that causality is so important. Anyway, that's my take at the moment.

@wion btw I was at the local museum (like, the museum of the arrondissement I live in) and thought of you when I saw their woodworking room. 😄https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/experiences/ortsmuseum-altstetten-studerhus/

I want to buy a non-portable audio player. Ideally it would simply run Rockbox. A screen that is mostly off. Audio out via headphone jack (to speakers I have in the house). No wifi. Mounts as a drive via USB so that I can manage the files without an application like iTunes or similar – or just uses SD cards that I can fill with audio files. I don't need wifi, bluetooth or batteries. What would you suggest?

Maybe in my heart of hearts I would like something like the DevTerm or MNT Pocket Reform. 😆 But I really don't need the mobile aspect. I'd just keep them hooked up to the wall socket, I suspect? Like my laptops: they're rarely far away from a wall plug. I just like to carry them around, which is different.https://www.clockworkpi.com/home-devterm

Why now? Because all these years I've had an iPod Classic 80G that I kept plugged into the wall near a speaker in the kitchen where I like to listen to music while I do our cooking or the dishes. But the batteries are so kaputt right now that it won't even power up even though it is plugged in! I'd like to avoid such a situation going forward.

I have found a weird Twitter Archive with my tweets (such a silly name, hah!) from 2008 to 2013. Strangely enough, my username is "kensanata@octodon.social" … how is that possible? Mastodon did not exist back then. Is it some script fetching the name from somewhere? I know it's not an entirely static archive. The avatar is loaded from pbs.twimg.com where it can no longer be found, for example.(Funny how I can edit a toot but I cannot edit the image description of an image. Have to delete and repost!)

I wonder whether the Twitter API going down now means that Bitlbee will no longer offer Twitter (but still has a Mastodon plugin!) and whether that will make it impossible for people to delete all their tweets without deleting their account (something I did before leaving Twitter but in the end I deleted my accounts as wells). Yikes, in any case.

What do you make of the hashtag #AYearForArt? To me, it looks like a bot network spamming the world. A paragraph of stuff that could be AI generated, links to sites where you can buy prints, a selection of hashtags, a picture. Always the same mesmerizing pattern. Am I AI paranoid or is this spam?

@simon @glyph The most interesting part of this is the rule about influential politicians, activists, etc. It feels like it's actually spilling it's own programming/rules.

@irimi1 I know Lisp fans aren't usually too fond of Emacs Lisp, but what I find so amazing is that it's immediately useful if you're an Emacs user. And if you really want to, you can do fancier stuff, too.At the same time, Common Lisp and Emacs Lisp aren't strictly functional languages. It's just a style, and so there's plenty of changing state, global variables, and all of that to be seen.
