Also reminder: Big Tech’s dangerous algorithms are pushing a personalised diet of lies and fear into peoples feeds to make money. This is great for the companies’ shareholder value, but destructive to society.https://eupolicy.social/@johnnyryan/111462614002874782

Exactly the same issue for child safety. Big Tech’s revenue-optimised algorithms push suicide and self loathing into our children’s feeds. Big Tech has a terrible record of self regulation. These companies will not save us. We have to pick up the tools to fix this. https://eupolicy.social/@johnnyryan/111929299301594717

@sun @newt As you say, unrest has a long history. Technology and how it is used has played a role in that history.

The EU must use the anti coercion instrument now, or be humiliated. Europe must be free to enforce its own law on its own soil.

Big tech firms would not be the problem that they now are if we had actually enforced the GDPR in 2018. But we - Ireland and the European Commission - allowed them to trample EU law. Now they are a major geostrategic problem, and the EU has a massive case of “vendor lock in”, too.Time for change.

The U.S. knows that trade ain’t just about trade. Just as Brussels should now understand that Competition and Data Protection are not just about markets and privacy. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-administration-weighs-sanctions-officials-implementing-eu-tech-law-sources-2025-08-25/

This is a bigger battle. U.S. policy is to boost authoritarians in to power across Europe, and to squeeze Europe until the pips squeak. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/apr/15/us-europe-military-spending-trump-ireland

Europe has to stand up now or it will be forced to accept the continued boosting of authoritarians in to power in every member state. Our backs are against the wall. There is nowhere left to run. We need our leaders to act.

Europe cannot trade away defence of its democracies for a Trump security guarantee that may not be worth much.

Apparently Commission spokespeople are claiming today that the Anti-Coercion Instrument can't be used against threats. However, the law says otherwise. Time to come back from your holidays people. https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:02023R2675-20231207

Incredible. The European Commission's most senior political leader for "Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy" @HennaVirkkunen apparently has nothing to say today. Except the post below, which is astonishing considering the circumstances.

If true, this update is astonishing. The Commission climbed down from a planned break up of Google’s ad business to a mere fine, and then dropped even the fine for fear of offending Trump. This is for market violations that have been proven in U.S. court.

Is it legal for publishers to force you to "consent" to a data free-for-all as payment for entering their sites & apps? No. Over the summer we have been talking to EU data watchdogs, detailing the case law and enforcement decisions. https://www.iccl.ie/digital-data/pay-or-ok/

We write in The Guardian this morning that the Commission’s plan to gut Europe’s digital rules will hurt European startups give U.S. tech an unassailable advantage, confirming Europe as a digital vassal. Trump now tariffing EU if Greenland is not ceded. Macron is now rightly pushing to deploy Europe’s Trade Bazooka. As I wrote in The Guardian months ago this is long overdue. My call in October —> https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/oct/09/the-eu-has-a-secret-weapon-to-counter-trumps-economic-bullying-its-time-to-use-it Macron today —> https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international/article/2026/01/18/macron-says-eu-should-deploy-anti-coercion-instrument-in-response-to-trump-s-tariff-threats-over-greenland_6749548_4.html
