Trump has changed what it means to be evangelicalhttps://wapo.st/4c2GhIU (gift link) "The idea of evangelicals who don’t go to church was once unusual. Now, it is surprisingly common. In 2008, only 16 percent of evangelicals said they never or seldom attended church. By 2020, 27 percent did.Evangelicalism, in short, has become about shared political convictions. In one survey of Christian attitudes ... 43 percent of evangelicals said they did not believe in the divinity of Christ." 1/2

"But it gets even more bizarre. According to the 2022 Cooperative Election Study, 14 percent of Muslims (and 12 percent of Hindus and 5 percent of Jews) described themselves as “born-again” or evangelical Christians. This is not a joke." 2/2https://wapo.st/4c2GhIU

@futurebird The way plants and animals have a type specimen which defines their species? I think this post qualifies as the type specimen for Mastodon.

Evangelicals rehearse ancient red heifer ritual linked to Jerusalem temple prophecyhttps://religionnews.com/2025/07/11/practice-run-of-red-heifer-ceremony-meant-to-pave-the-way-for-a-new-temple-held-in-jerusalem/"Organizers said the ceremony must be performed before the Jewish Temple can be rebuilt in Jerusalem, ushering in a messianic age of peace." I only learned of this project recently, via Talia Lavin's recent _Wild Faith_: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/talia-lavin/wild-faith/9780306829192/. Excellent book, but the second part, on education, families, women, and children, includes some very disturbing accounts.

"In 2023, Stanford researchers would create a transparency tracker to score AI companies on whether they revealed even basic information about their large deep learning models, such as how many parameters they had, what data they were trained on, and whether there had been any independent verification of their capabilities. All ten of the companies they evaluated in the first year, including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, received an F; the highest score was 54 percent." Karen Hao, Empire of AI.

Scientists Tracked An Olm For 2,569 Days And It Did Not Move An Inch | IFLSciencehttps://www.iflscience.com/scientists-tracked-an-olm-for-2569-days-and-it-did-not-move-an-inch-79999"When a team of scientists studied a group of olms in a Balkan cave, they were hoping to reveal new information about how these fascinating amphibians behave outside of the lab. They weren’t, however, expecting to find they were mind-blowingly lazy, with some individuals not moving from a single spot for years and years." #goals via @onan

@mattia @onan I figured they must have determined that it was but I too wondered how! My guess is that it was moving its body a tiny bit or that they could see its heart through the skin, since In the context of the article "not moving" seems to refer to moving from its place, not "frozen."

@nadiyar @mattia @onan That seems not impossible but since amphibians are ectothermic I'd expect the difference in temperature from the water to be very small, especially underground where there's no sun to bask in.

Beam with Carved Human Face Retrieved from Polish Lakehttps://archaeology.org/news/2025/07/22/beam-with-carved-human-face-retrieved-from-polish-lake/LAKE LEDNICA, POLAND––_Notes from Poland_ reports that when underwater archaeologists from Nicolaus Copernicus University retrieved a section of a wooden beam from the bottom of Lake Lednica, they were initially unaware what exactly they had recovered. It was only later onshore that they noticed a small human face had been carved into it––making it a rare and extraordinary find.
