I'm way too old to be doing this shit. But I'm doing it anyway.Last week I took delivery of a newborn baby. Yes, he is white. He is a foster. Mom and dad are junkies and go in and out of jail/rehab. Baby was born high and had to go through detox before they let him out of the hospital.Part of me wants to say that these could've been good people who were just badly treated by the system, that under ARE REGIME they'd be productive members of society. Maybe. I don't know. I go back and forth. I tend to lean towards the "heroin addicts were already scum anyway" side but I know people get uptight about that and I admit I could be wrong. Just how I see things from my experience.I will say this: if a woman has a baby, and she has drugs in her and the baby had drugs in him ... swift trial and a speedy execution after having the opportunity to make a last Confession and accept Christ.I'm willing to hear arguments for "dragged outside and shot" but I think this is a good compromise. Anyway, the last few days have been hard on everyone, my two children, me, even my wife who as much as she is enjoying going back to Babyland is still too old for this shit. I just hope we're doing some good. I don't know. You have to wait years to find out. The money is nice and you get some small benefits. Gonna get him WIC for example, that's a help. I get paternity leave again so that's nice, thanks homos. I'm exhausted and it's making my migraines act up when they were just fine before, but maybe it's my calling. Can't say for sure. I'd appreciate prayers. Chicken has had a hard time but is coming around. My son, who still needs a nickname, seems to really enjoy the baby when he notices it's around in between running around the house making tiger noises and trying to destroy everything. He calls it "my baby" and fusses over it in a very cute way.Be careful what you pray for. God does not just bequeath you gifts. He makes you earn them. He is the embodiment of justice, after all. I asked for strength. I'm getting the ultimate workout.

Getting down to the wire on the new story. Have to story-fy it a little more as I really am writing a novel chapter and not a short story.It's a bit sad, I grew up reading short stories from the golden era of that art form. I read and re-read Ray Bradbury's complete collection. But I just can't do it. Part of it was, I realized that even as I idealized the art form was that it mostly dead. You really only get good at it if you write them over and over and over to pay the light bill. And no one reads these things anymore, not really. They're kept around as an art-house kind of thing, and also so that publishers can have contests that they can have wrapped up in a month or two.The last of the greats is probably Stephen King. Yeah, I know, he's an extremely fucked up mutant, and his books are largely garbage. But damn can the man write a short story. Because he learned the craft the right way - sweating over his typewriter day after day to feed his children and keep the lights on.

I also wanted to warn the younger guys -- problems that you have now will not get better over time. They will get worse if you don't work on them.I could go into it but not right now. I'm just warning you. These things do not get easier or less of a problem with age and maturity and even wisdom. Unless you work on them. You will not grow out of them. They will not fix themselves.
