@sneak @calcifer Something can be factually true and, yet, one can reasonably question the motives of someone who feels the need to make a point of bringing it up given a certain social climate.Don’t be obtuse.

@sneak @calcifer Why is it important? What truth do you think is so important to uncover?

@sneak @calcifer There is a a HUGE difference between seeking the truth (i.e. in a research setting) and airing wild-ass speculation in public in ways that just so happen to validate the prejudices of an increasingly dangerous and empowered group of bigots seeking reasons to marginalize trans people. That’s not seeking knowledge, it’s providing kindling to a match.

@shacker I almost never do it.I feel like most people are too multifaceted to make this feature make sense. Not only do I have a handful of rather different interests, as long as we share interests I also don’t really care if the people I interact with are on the same server or some other one. It’s largely irrelevant. The interaction experience is about the same regardless, after all.

@shacker I have somewhat mixed feelings about investing time into a walled garden service at this point, but I absolutely have to give credit to the Glass folks for coming up with excellent UX for photographers (both their iOS app and the web). It really is top-notch.

@shacker Well, by that standard it’s equivalent to Instagram in its default configurationI guess what I mean is feeding content into a social service that could shut down, pivot to become something else entirely, or be replaced with awful management.Perhaps “proprietary” would be a better term.I think the Glass folks have the right product mindset for something like this, but a lot can change in a span of a few years.

@micahflee As long as it’s truly open? That’s fine. Anything that drains the proprietary networks of users is fine by me.That said, I hope some sort of interop effort develops. There’s no competitive need to wall people into one place or another, and if Bluesky and Mastodon users can interact that would be ideal.Curious about what UX improvements they have on their end, too. Perhaps we can learn from what they do right.

@shacker Realistically, I think we’ll see both.Artists whose deeply personal creative work expresses something intrinsically tied to their humanity will not be displaced. Because, even as a “product,” their work’s value is inherently tied to the life and experience of the artist. But that won’t help artists working on advertisements, product packaging, or pretty-but-bland nature scenes and abstracts in chain hotel rooms and dental offices. Human touch is of limited value there.

A reminder: BlueSky isn’t decentralized until anybody can install a server and run their own node and communicate freely with every other BlueSky user.Until then it’s just another Jack-associated social network.#BlueSky #BlueSkySocial

@jemal @matt @Meyerweb Also, let’s keep things in perspective:A clearly-labeled option to pick one’s own server can be found… just 12 pts below.(With a “Learn more” button linking to a page explaining what federation entails below that)If this is a mustache-twirling eeevil capitalist plot to spend half a decade creating a decentralized social network only to corral it for one’s own, I’m just not seeing it.

@jemal @matt @Meyerweb I’m sure Eugen is open to feedback about the UX of that screen, but treating it as a conspiracy — and dismissing the (rather understandable) need to simplify things, because having to pick a server is absolutely a sticking point for a lot of people — is just bonkers. If Mastodon fails to live up to its potential it’ll be because too many people put absolute ideological purity ahead of addressing user needs.

@jemal @matt @Meyerweb Anyhow, from my perspective, if there is anything to fault about that screen it is its inconsistent use of title case.

@mattblaze I think in the spirit of the web it’s appropriate for users to be able to decide how the content they’re viewing is presented, but I can see the default being best set to leave images uncropped (within reason). This is probably always going to vary depending on client, though, and Mastodon has a ton of clients with varying behavior.

@atomicpoet This is probably true.I’m one of those people who joined up who would never, ever describe himself as an anti-capitalist. I am someone who finds value in market economies — a liberal in the classical tradition, basically. That said, I am also sensitive to how markets can be captured and controlled, and interoperability and portability are essential to keeping that from happening.I want individuals to have ultimate control, not entities (government OR corporate).

I get that there’s a a pretty strong anti-capitalist undercurrent on here, but it’s still pretty messed up seeing people damn near celebrating the likely demise of people solely because of their wealth.
