You broadcast spam as widely as possible, then reel in any suckers that respond.That's why scam messages are so obvious. Unlike the initial broadcast, the reeling-in phase is labor intensive. Making the initial message implausible results in only the most gullible people responding, meaning that you'll waste less time on people who realize they're being scammed before they send you money.

I am so, so tired of hearing people say that we will face a climate crisis unless we reduce carbon emissions immediately. The opportunity to avert a crisis ended around 2000. Since then, we've had the opportunity to make the crisis less devastating, with the minimum possible level of horror and misery increasing with each year we fail to act. What's more, even if we halted all carbon emissions tomorrow, global warming would continue for decades.We are in the crisis RIGHT NOW.#ClimateChange

I finally found time to read Douglas Hofstadter's blisteringly critical essay on large language models. As usual, he makes excellent points, and supports them with precise and well thought out arguments. It is, then, merely a wonderful bonus that the essay is centered around Hofstadter critiquing an AI which is in turn pretending to be Hofstadter writing about GEB. Just now I was making a post elsewhere about my having experienced a particular online social evolution pattern "since I was on the ARPANET". Along with my longstanding computer geekery, I'm a huge Tolkien fan, and it struck me that being a developer who used the ARPANET is equivalent to being an elf who lived under the light of the Two Trees in Valinor. In the late Third Age of Middle Earth, or in the 2020s, we are rare, wise, and immensely powerful. 🙂#tolkien #arpanet #humor

The subject line of a spam email I received this morning has given me the recruiting slogan I will use when I finally get around to founding a cult: "FindPeace-of Mind and a FreeToilet."I will use it exactly as shown. Any cult member who questions the spacing, punctuation, or capitalization of this slogan will be kicked out of the cult. People seem to be settling on calling Elon Musk's social media dumpster fire "Xitter". I study classical Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, and in the Spanish transliteration of that language, "x" is provided "sh" (so e.g. "xochitl" is approximately "SHOH-cheet"). It seems to me that this pronunciation is quite appropriate for use in "Xitter". Tezcatlipoca would approve. 🙃#XitterIsPronouncedShitter #nahuatl

@stux The whole problem here is that people who produce and consume hate speech don't think of it as hate speech. They think of it as the truth. When you tell them to stop saying (for example) that Mexican immigrants are all rapists and drug dealers, they feel like Galileo being told to stop saying that the Earth moves. Even if you manage to shut them up, they still believe it, and will resume saying it as soon as they find a new place to do so.

It struck me earlier today that we use the word "server" both for "computer fulfilling remote requests" and "person handling orders in a restaurant". Then it occurred to me that they have many similarities:* Unpredictable delay between request and response.* Sometimes fail to work for no clear reason.* Other jobs often interfere with availability.* Memory issues can make service unusable.* Poor prioritization strategies result in client starvation.#SoftwareEngineering #Humor
