Of course, this also plays into power dynamics. Eg, if it's someone at work reporting a problem, and they're "beneath" you on the corporate food chain, or if they're your kid, etc. And the intersectionality of gender, race, and all the rest. But a confounding factor is that many allistics are so sensitive to status threat, they'll sometimes invent a power dynamic where none exists, which puts them in the disadvantaged position, and respond accordingly.

That response may be any of the fight/flight/freeze/fawn reactions to a perceived threat.Fight: jeez I just want you to listen! What's WRONG with you? Why don't you CARE!?Flight: whatever (leaves)Freeze: doesn't want to talk about it, becomes unresponsive and/or changes the subjectFawn: Great idea! I'll try that! Thanks! (later: *doesnt try that*)

So to be effective and circumvent this reaction, becoming curious instead puts US in the dummy position. It's an implicit acknowledgement that we don't understand, and shows that we're working to gain that understanding. We can teach by learning, even if we don't already know, because what we bring is a detached and curious mindset, and an eagerness to find connections.

@Hyolobrika me too! But "try to fully and deeply understand the problem" is much more accessible to me.

@Hyolobrika Not at all. It varies, but a common theme is thousands of hours of research into autism, learning everything one can about it, autistic special interest style. Being misdiagnosed as something else first is also a common theme. And, because tism, usually a fair bit of self doubt and critical analysis as a result of taking the vaguely worded dx criteria way too literally. ("I don't engage in black or white thinking, because there is one example where I didn't", etc)

@Hyolobrika ah, I see. there's exactly one person one could self diagnose. And that person self diagnoses someone who self diagnoses.

@Hyolobrika @vandomva gender affirming care is medical care, and we live in a society. If the purpose of society is not to care for its members, what the hell good is it?

@Hyolobrika @vandomva all body modifications deemed medically justified by a doctor, yes. Most medical care modifies the body, that's generally the point.

@Hyolobrika @vandomva but also, you're way off base in this debate, because it's not a matter of debate. OP said, and I agree, "I want tax money to pay for such and such". You can't disagree with some else's desire, you can have a different desire or think less of them for having it, but it is what it is. Yes, I want *you* to be *forced* to contribute to the welfare of the society you depend on, even if you are too shortsighted to see the value of doing so.

@Hyolobrika @vandomva if you honestly believe that "gender affirming care" only means "genital modification because feelings", or that social and medical gender transition is not statistically proven beyond any reasonable doubt to be "lifesaving care", you are not informed enough to be discussing this issue in public.

@Hyolobrika @vandomva Health insurance routinely covers elective sterilization, post mastectomy breast augmentation, and reconstructive facial surgery, largely due to the social and mental health benefits of these treatments. If adding leopard stripes made a large group at high risk of suicide and depression 66% less likely to off themselves, yes, we should pay for that, because a society not worth living in for some is not worth living in period.

@Hyolobrika @vandomva furthermore, our healthcare system *already* covers gender affirming care for cis people in a huge number of cases. How is transitioning logically any different than HRT to treat a cis woman with abnormally high testosterone levels who doesn't want to grow a beard? It's just oppression of a victimized class of people, and it's fucked up.

@Hyolobrika @vandomva hell, I was able to get "genital modification because feelings" covered by my insurance. The social emotional benefits of me not being fertile were deemed medically valid enough to cover a vasectomy. Cis people get body modifications and gender affirming care, covered by their insurance, ALL THE TIME, for far less pressing "life saving" reasons than gender transitions.

@didek @wilfredh We explored this several times with npm. It's intolerably slow if you have lots of small artifacts that you need to resolve and load on demand. That's why no one does it.

@didek @wilfredh package updates are frequent, and the artifacts are tiny and mostly in a very long tail of niche usage, except for a very small number of superstars (express, lodash, Django, etc.) Torrents are best suited to large, long lived, popular artifacts. So with a package registry torrent you either have mirrors all over (which are always way out of date), or always go have to back to the authoritative source anyway, so why bother?
