Does anyone know if a “URL Shortener” service exists that is focused on privacy and not bloated with analytics monitoring? I just want one for personal use with family and friends that shortens links without having to worry about the typical privacy invasions most URL shortening services seem to include. @jonah @privacytools

@realcaseyrollins Thanks Casey. I am surprised one of the #privacy services like @protonmail or @signalapp have not added a URL Shortener service devoid of analytical tracking sludge. Seems like an opportunity to me. Although I suppose it might be difficult to overcome knowing where their users are sending people. But ya gotta trust someone... e.g. your VPN provider like @ProtonVPN pn@mastodon.social. Perhaps they would be the best choice to enable this for the masses.

Researching FREE #video #chat solutions for Family/Friends today (optimize for reasonably #secure, video/audio quality, usage ease). Top 3 for family and friend convos appears to be 1: if only 2 people use #Signal Messenger. Trusted, #E2E, cross-platform. 2: If >2 participants Apple #FaceTime. Trusted, E2E. Only available on #Apple products though. 3: #Zoom despite recent press. #Encrypted (not E2E), strong user experience, cross platform. Use a meeting password. Thoughts? Think Grandma.

@jeff I came close to including Jitsi but since the Jitsi Videobridge encrypts traffic passed to participants, but is not #E2E I didn’t think it outweighed Zooms existing market penetration bonus. Are there other #Jitsi benefits over #Zoom?

@jeff I also found the #Jitsi limitation that requires use of the #Google #Chrome browser an added bit of complexity for users. But I really appreciate your reply and suggestion! I'll play with it some more.

@syntax @jeff #Jitsi video conferencing has advantages over #Zoom for sure. Open source, no data sales, no software download if used in a browser, encrypted #E2E for 2-party video chats. But similar to Zoom, not E2E encrypted for >2 participants. Seems deigned for “meet now”. If people tire of Zoom’s dodgy attention to #security, Jitsi seems to be the alternative for free consumer #video chats. You just need to trust the #8x8 company that funds and hosts the public platform. Thanks!

Looking for some education on #Mastodon. I have been following 3-4 instances based on subject interest and have an account on each, logged in on each when I want to post. When I have something to say I post to the relevant instance using that instance’s account. Is this right? Or should I only have 1 mastodon identity (account) and post only to 1 primary instance, and toot references to people in other instances as necessary using @username@instance to ensure they see it? How do you all manage this?

@resist1984 @Wetrix @Tommy I have not heard much about Twitter censoring left wing content... I’m more aware of right wing content being reported as suppressed. Perhaps that will change as your supporting article suggests. Either way, not good. Users themselves share destructive blame as well in my opinion, having long forgotten how to hold a constructive conversation of opposing ideas. If immaturity and impatience are the fuel, Twitter and Facebook are the flame thrower.

Teachers are ready to quit rather than put their lives at risk - buzzfeednews.com/carolineodono...Does it really make sense at this point in the Brave New Covid World to hold back opening schools, and by extension companies and the economy because some teachers are afraid? The vast majority of teachers under 50 will be fine as will the kids. For those over 60 at risk, perhaps implement remote teaching or time for retirement. I think we need to get on with life as Covid isn’t going away soon.

@DirgeRamThrust I’ve avoided having a #Facebook account from day one. Evil creature Facebook is. The hard part with #Mastodon is finding enough people to follow with the same interests as you. If #cat #photos is your thing then you are in luck. This instance is fantastic though for #privacy best #practices, privacy points of view and related #software. Great people who are very helpful.

As I listen to various “how to get back to #school” commissions describing NEW policies, funding, staff, and restrictions necessary to keep #kids “safe” I ponder if they have the wrong #goal. Doubling the number of busses so kids can #social #distance seems like so many of their “requirements” - like trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon. Children are almost universally unharmed by #Covid-19. In the #USA, we might want to try deflecting the virus from at-risk vs controlling it short-term.

@kaikatsu @velartrill a slippery slope I believe. The enduring #American form of #government splits power between the Federal government and the individual States, with the later retaining the majority of power on purpose. Americans are not fans of %Kings and #Queens, and fear despots. Sometimes this gets in the way of common sense (like wearing a #mask if you live in a Covid hot zone) but over the long run keeping government as small as possible provides more #freedom.
