@eighthave maybe chromebooks rather have a hardware-oriented product owner, while chromium/browser developments are more driven by ads department?

Beware of mentioning accounts in Direct-Messages: If you DM somebody and you mention another fediverse account the message also goes to the mentioned one! It's very surprising to me and can be socially awkward. A quick fix would be to name the feature "restricted message" or "scoped message" or basically anything else than "direct message" which arguably comes with different UX expectations than what it really does.

Meanwhile EU borders kill people on a daily basis. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/6/21/dozens-of-people-drown-after-dinghy-sinks-near-canary-islandsStill remember how in school I learned about the west/east Germany border where around 140 people were killed in 28 years and it was considered a very evil thing (I grew up in the west). Many times more died just in June 2023 on EU borders. The EU border is orders of magnitude deadlier than the Berlin wall.

@kravietz i guess you know that canary islands are formally part of the EU even if they are geographically part of Africa? So i am not quite sure what you want to say with this note.

@kravietz you make it sound like people just randomly and inexplicably die because of weird choices to cross the ocean. The EU causes unsafe routes e.g. by liability-rules for airlines, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Why_Boat_Refugees_Don%27t_Fly!_-_Factpod_16.webm and moreover illegal pushbacks by police are not that different from getting shot in the back , except they kill a lot more people at once usually and you don't find bullets but maybe just corpses on the beach.

@kravietz did you listen to the link https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Why_Boat_Refugees_Don%27t_Fly!_-_Factpod_16.webm which discusses an EU directive effectively prohibiting air lines from transporting refugees which is the major reason people use unsafe boat routes?

Sorry but i am afraid there is nothing to party about regarding UK's #OnlineSafeyBill #e2ee The UK "not applying" the powers they ask to get is maybe worse compared to pushing through directly. Why? Pushing through now would likely mean WA/Signal/iMessage pulling out of UK with a big public backlash. And then the equivalent EU "ChatControl" bill would have a hard time to pass. But now the UK can wait and sync with the EU, possibly the US, and then the threat of pulling out of UK is muted.

Basically the big problem of US, EU, UK legislation trying to kill #e2ee encryption has always been **synchornization**: if just one of these power blocks illegalizes #e2ee then there would be an exodus of tech companies. It's an innovation to rather legislate all the legal instruments for banning e2ee but say "we won't use them until needed and possible". Watch out for the EU and the US trying to modify their ongoing e2ee banning legislation similarly. I hope i am wrong about this.

The currently relevant argument against government moves to ban #e2ee would be to discuss what can be done to actually protect children **offline** (aka on the body/direct experience level) because that is what counts in the end. Unfortunately, the discourse is framed in terms of technology and technical feasibility instead of actually discussing what helps children in the real world: more social work and more financial support, more trained personell for schools etc.

these planet-burning excuses for world-leaders, and what interests they represent and how we relate to them, even if opposing them, are what keeps us locked into what we experience as reality. (picture from adbusters)

@strypey I guess you are aware that the CCC congress and camps have a no photo policy as well? Congress is a yearly 15k people gathering and you won't find photos other than without faces or people who consented/produced a selfie

@lyyn @adbenitez @cehteh @delta @alandes Who "owns" a 1:1 conversation or the messages and media in it? Doesn't have one true answer unless everybody agrees on it, which is not even the case in this little thread somewhere on the Fediverse.

@feld really a bit weird that no one talks about it? Can't claim to fully understand the take it down act but it sounds like potentially having far reaching implications.

There are two types of countries when it comes to accountability of top politicians -- Brazil https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/apr/25/brazil-fernando-collor-just arrested a former head of state and France are known to not shy away from prosecuting former top politicians. On the other end of the spectrum, Germany, the UK and the US consistently fail to prosecute top politicians and corruption at the top. That's at least my rough view. Maybe there is a scientifically done survey?

all humans on planet earth can stand next to each other on *Mallorca*, a small island in the Mediterranean sea. It'd be a bit cozy (2-3 people on each square meter) but it's useful to have this scale in mind when someone talks about "overpopulation".

@ambiguous_yelp @delta the problem is not so much people on the streets, they can communicate in various ad-hoc ways. It's about those who need to cross distances digitally to communicate with relatives etc. Tor does not work at all in iran currently btw. I doubt Briar is of any practical use at all in Iran, as much as i sympathize with mesh networking paradigms of arranging communications.
