@thenewoil Great video. Have you ever looked into Posteo? I haven't tried it yet, but it seems like an encrypted email provider that checks most of the boxes and is reasonably priced. Would be happy to hear your thoughts.

@digdeeper @Sprinklednights What about something like Codeberg Pages?

@thenewoil Enjoyed the episode. Just a quick note: WhatsApp *does* offer end-to-end encrypted backups on, but they are opt-in (and also of course come with all the usual disclaimers when dealing with proprietary software from Meta). https://faq.whatsapp.com/1192377921246090

Published my guide for "10 Basic Steps to Digital Privacy". I'm pretty proud of this one and would welcome feedback! https://gunther.link/posts/privacy-basics/

Since @bitwarden recently followed me, perhaps I should mention that they get a shout-out in this blog post!

@fatboy Thanks for the feedback! uBlock Origin does get a shoutout in step 5, though I could probably write a whole post on browser hardening, though it would require a bit more research on my end.

@fatboy uBlock Origin now offers the basic parameter stripping feature of ClearURLs so I don't know how necessary both are. I have my browser set to clear cookies on exit, is there an advantage to the cookie auto-delete extension? I don't care about cookies is nice if you're clearing cookies anyway, but more about convenience than privacy if I'm not mistaken.

@fatboy Privacy Possum looks like a better version of Privacy Badger, which is cool, though I'm not sure how much benefit it offers beyond uBlock Origin and hardened browser settings, I''d have to look into it. But thanks for all the suggestions!

#Newpipe v0.24.1 just dropped. Seems to fix the bug of channel pages/subscriptions not loading, but the release notes imply there may be more to it. Regardless, kudos to the devs for their hard work! https://github.com/TeamNewPipe/NewPipe/releases/tag/v0.24.1

@thenewoil I think it's important that pro-privacy folk read articles like this as well. We don't want to get caught in our own groupthink.

I used to unironically use the 🙂 emoji until a few years ago when an ex sent me this meme in response. Was this just me? Did everyone else know that 🙂 doesn't express sincere happiness?

@tilvids Better than pushing all new users to mastodon.social would be to have a random selection from a pool of open, general servers that the new account is created on. This would ease sign-up while also promoting decentralization.

@thenewoil I switched away from Brave as my default search engine, partially because I hated being sent to Google or Bing for the image search results. Maybe I'll try it out again.

#Telegram is a poor choice of you're looking for a private messenger. This video does a pretty good job of explaining why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtRQKQkvUfE&t=537

It's amazing how much blind loyalty people have to #GoogleChrome. I was attending a lecture the other day where the lecturer clicked on a YouTube link from their presentation and when they realized the computer has automatically opened it in #MicrosoftEdge, they closed the window and reopened it in Chrome! Why?!

Personally, I'm not crazy about either browser, but there's literally no difference in this context. Edge and Chrome are both Chromium-based and are functionally identical for the purposes of playing a YouTube video. It's crazy how much the "uninstall Internet Explorer and use Chrome instead" mentality from 1-2 decades ago (back when it made some sense) persists into 2023 when it really doesn't.
