@FreakyFwoof @zleap There are also eight digits after the 800 area code. If you dial that in the US, I think the phone system just ignores digit #8; but it’d but interesting to know if you’d get Western Digital on the other end of the line.*although not interesting enough for me to bother trying it

@zleap @FreakyFwoof IIRC (I’m an American, but not a lawyer) it’s one of those laws without criminal penalties, so some person or group adversely affect by the company’s (in)action would have to sue for damages in civil court.But I stand ready to be corrected by someone who actually knows something about ADA enforcement.

@stux There’s a level on which I’ve got to admire the skill it must take to stack a load of logs with that big a hollow in the middle (& for it not to collapse while being transported on a flatbed truck).But yeah, that’s a scam. & the older, bigger guy is giving off a serious vibe of “strong arm robbery is well within my skill set, as I’d be happy to demonstrate right now.”

@stux There have been efforts, most notably Esperanto, which was created with the intention that it would be an easy-to-learn global language (it turned to be easier to learn for speakers of European languages than for others).Latin played that role im medieval Europe; & French was once, apparently, a lingua franca.

@jmccyoung @ai6yr It always seemed odd to me, how people say “Well, the lottery prize is up to umpty-gazillion dollars this week, guess I’d better buy a ticket” (as if it’d be financially irresponsible not to).Why would you want to buy your lottery ticket right when everyone else is buying lottery tickets? Wouldn’t you want to buy your tickets when the prize is low & the selection pool is smaller; and your odds of winning are (infinitesimally) better?
