@stux part of the function of language is to prevent communication. That’s why there are many languages not one, many dialects not one, why young people use slang, why academics speak as academics, etc. This is the non-communicative function of language: exclude. And by excluding, to signal in-group and out-group and social status. Hold-over forms from earlier higher primate behaviors.But - all for learning more languages!

@stux There have been efforts, most notably Esperanto, which was created with the intention that it would be an easy-to-learn global language (it turned to be easier to learn for speakers of European languages than for others).Latin played that role im medieval Europe; & French was once, apparently, a lingua franca.

@stux I do like that English is a kind of “common speech,” because it means I can be lazy, but this also tends to make English speakers more xenophobic, which is bad.

@stux Galactic Basic, Common, Terran, Trade, Universal…Fictional universes all seem to have language every character knows and understand that sounds pan awful lot like English.

@stuxLet's have a common language but not at the expense of local languages that define our different cultures. Communicating in another language changes me a little and gives me better insight into other people.

@stux I thought about that before but now I think a common language would be a bad thing, outside of specialized use cases (eg international law, programming languages). I now think of language as a form of identity and self-expression. To consider that all humans should mostly use the same language is akin to requiring all humans to eat the same food, wear the same clothes, make art the same way, show emotions the same way. So much human beauty would be lost.
