"You get back to your chemistry set. We'll put in the fix. And don't talk to any reporters!"Hey I think the filmmakers were trying to communicate that this old guy is the villain of our little play this evening#monsterdon

Hey, this movie is from 1980. Why is it channeling that unpleasantly misanthropic "every single person is horrible" vibe that we keep noticing in films from the 70s?Anyhow I wonder what Ramon is up toI hope he's having fun#monsterdon

OK, hands up everyone who just saw that half-second shot of an unevenly bricked-up sewer tunnel and bellowed "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, MONTRÉSOR"Don't lie, we see you miscreants#monsterdon

@ricci it even has indices¹ ² ³!!¹: https://www.nongnu.org/ext2-doc/ext2.html#contrib-performance²: https://www.kernel.org/doc/ols/2002/ols2002-pages-425-438.pdf³: I know you're using BSD and thus likely not ext[2-4], but I expect that whatever filesystem you're using there has a similar optimization

I hate the "cattle vs. pets" framing of managing larger clusters of computers with automation, implying that managing small clusters or single machines is done manually.I hate it because managing a single machine without a framework suitable for automation has been generally poor practice *forever*.But I hate it even more because the foundation of the metaphor is that it is OK and normal to treat livestock without compassion or care. It is quite simply not.Retire that framing, please.

@tomjennings @mathew @peter @cstross most of the revisions in the Andúril codebase are workarounds for sloppily built hardware¹, to give the project its due.And as you might expect from an open source project, its existence has given a bunch of slightly-above-hobbyist-level hardware manufacturers permission to treat the firmware as someone else's problem and concentrate on building glowy neat widgets to a price point. It's done wonders for the flashlight world.¹: https://github.com/ToyKeeper/anduril/pulls?q=is%3Apr

@cks the good news is that Linux's filesystems and mpd(1) will handle those files _just fine_.However, I discovered when using an mpd satellite database setup and an SMB mount from my home fileserver to my work laptop¹ and trying to play woob by vool (or vool by woob? You know the one) that macOS absolutely does not handle this situation gracefully at all.I do not understand how anyone manages to take this OS seriously. It just does not _work_.

@cks ¹: work laptop never gets to have personal music files stored on it of course, but I'm more lenient about letting it use mpd to cache files into RAM for playback

@bkuhn I'm afraid I've never owned a Vizio product (and never will), I won't be able to help you here: I cannot accept their amply demonstrated stance towards FS/OSS licenses¹; their willingness to inject advertising into the user experience²; their habit of exfiltrating usage information³; and their refusal to function when denied a network connection⁴.¹: https://sfconservancy.org/copyleft-compliance/vizio.html²: https://www.consumerreports.org/money/advertising-marketing/vizio-inserts-pop-up-ads-over-tv-shows-a7020591358/³: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24912527⁴: https://www.reddit.com/r/VIZIO_Official/comments/18g8hvo/hey_vizio_my_internet_is_out_and_i_cant_watch_my/

@bkuhn I have to confess that yes, I did mean to. That was a _very_ oblique joke. (Are you familiar with @cwebber 's occasional pleas for someone to help explain how ActivityPub works? Crops up every few months, always pulls in some very sincere explanations from people who don't realize she wrote the W3C standard.) Sorry for being unnecessarily obscure, I meant no harm by it.

@publicvoit I'm interested in such a thing too. Instead right now I am using a Caldigit Element 4 hub and manually plugging and unplugging two upstream cables. It's an inelegant solution but a very good hub. (I have a USB-C 5GbE network adapter plugged into one of the rear ports.)
