@futurebird I remember an article in the CoEvolution Quarterly circa 1975 where Gregory Bateson is talking (I think to California Governor Jerry Brown) about the book of Job. I'm fuzzy on the details, but in the midst of Job's suffering, he's asked "Dost thou know when the hinds do calve?" What an odd time to inquire about knowledge of natural history!

@futurebird @josh0 BF Skinner's research showed that intermittent random positive reinforcement produces the most persistent behaviors. If you get positive results every now and then, people (and mice) attribute it to what they did and will continue doing the same. That's what make superstitions so durable.

@tuban_muzuru @stevewfolds @VeroniqueB99 When my 8-track tapes started self-destructing, I opened one of them and wound the tape on a reel-to-reel reel. I used the case to feed the tape into my roommate’s 8-track player on his stereo, and duped it onto his reel-to-reel. I salvaged quite a few 8-tracks that way and put a cassette player in my car.
