today i was accosted by an entire murder of crows who have figured out my game. if you get in my face, i’ll give you seed, bread, and peanuts. so one got in my face, then called all their friends when i made an offering. suddenly i was being confronted by a new pair every half block, until finally the oldest crow i’d ever seen got within arm’s reach of me, haughtily evaluating my offering as nearby crows narrated the encounter to the neighborhood. they were dirty in a way one cannot clean, furrowed and disheveled by years upon years. i bowed my head and moved on, and i saw this elder fly away with a mouth full of bread as the younger ones picked over what it left behind. #CrowReport

so many crows came to see me that i ran out of goodies halfway through my walk. on my return trip, a regular i call fatapi came to see me and followed me for a block, like "hey, come on breadlady. where's the bread? am i doing something wrong?" they got so close and were so calm, and also disappointed. #CrowReport

neighborhood crows know that my deal is: if i notice you, i leave an offering. normally crows are very discrete, preferring to hide in trees so watchers can safely coordinate surveillance. so the alternative, of ensuring that i notice them, is swooping over my head or shoulder. i actually yipped in surprise today when one came within a couple inches of my ear. another tapped the top of my head with their talons as they flew over. fatapi just lands in front of me, even going so far as to block my path. fatapi is a bold one. #CrowReport

deletes are hard in a p2p context, usually because protocols use an append-only log as their core datastructure. if you add anything to the log, it can never be removed. this provides important guarantees that allow peers to trust the integrity of the data they exchange. an app can only post another log message asking you to kindly disregard another message, but the initial content will always be distributed with the log. this renders it absolutely inappropriate for many types of app.

whether a p2p system has true deletes is usually glossed over and hidden deep in architecture documentation, which typically only exists in an open source project. when groups publish p2p software without this documentation, it's a very bad smell. it means you can only appraise the usefulness of the application, not the rights its design truly affords. i'm honestly disappointed by the hypercore crew in their pivot from being an ambitious alternative to blockchains as a #p2p datastructure, to a willing companion.

i have been listening to this song and dance from p2p people for years, that deletes are hard so just be careful what you put out there. sure, that makes sense for some apps! but hype people sweep this stuff under the rug and pretend their protocol can be used for anything. it's irresponsible to pretend this isn't a reality just so you can market better.
