deletes are hard in a p2p context, usually because protocols use an append-only log as their core datastructure. if you add anything to the log, it can never be removed. this provides important guarantees that allow peers to trust the integrity of the data they exchange. an app can only post another log message asking you to kindly disregard another message, but the initial content will always be distributed with the log. this renders it absolutely inappropriate for many types of app.

whether a p2p system has true deletes is usually glossed over and hidden deep in architecture documentation, which typically only exists in an open source project. when groups publish p2p software without this documentation, it's a very bad smell. it means you can only appraise the usefulness of the application, not the rights its design truly affords. i'm honestly disappointed by the hypercore crew in their pivot from being an ambitious alternative to blockchains as a #p2p datastructure, to a willing companion.
