@jdp23 @KimCrayton1 @QasimRashid @mekkaokereke I always thought that "unconscious bias" was just a strategy to get white people talking about bias without becoming immediately defensive.

@thor Depends on whether or not you are getting paid by the word. If not, then the style guides. Also what @vincent said in an earlier comment about using dialogue, action or gesture to indicate what the adverb was trying to do.

@thor I think there are styles which go in and out of vogue. My main objection to adverbs is that they are a kind of shorthand. My short post aside, you might well end up using more words to show what is happening in a scene rather than just tagging it with an adverb, but you will gain precision and an opportunity to develop pacing and your own voice.

@thor I think genre matters a lot, obviously, when you make those choices. My default is to write everything and then start cutting. I read with my minds eye - if I can't see what the writer is telling me than I'm not fully engaged in the work. "No." She said dismissively. vs She rolled her eyes. "Piss off" she said.

@fitheach I've found myself tempted to get a new camera to shoot film. I don't shoot film now. I can't imagine me ever shooting film. But I still want the camera. Cameras, man...
