@simon Give her the full name. She’ll be able pick one of the parts as her nickname when she gets older, plus long names are a career booster. Woof … ;-)

@anderspuck @randahl But Randahl has a point here. Whatever the motives, the outcome is what he claims: the insufficient support is throwing 🇺🇦 under the bus (knowing that the bus will break).

@simon Generating that code probably used more cycles than the planetary demand for shift operations for a decade or so … ;-)

@simon To me, it’s the AGI part of the mission that looked toxic from the start — it’s impossible to build sth on top of such an extraordinary claim without attracting greed, madness and drama.

@simon Great idea! Underlining the normality of using environments. And we should add preventing package installation outside of environments (on platforms that allow this without sudo), because this virtually (ha!) is never what is intended.

@simon Ah, misunderstanding. I though you meant that they somehow retrieve enough of the training material from the model to have a copyright case. OpenAI‘s records revealed will be interesting for sure, although I doubt what they did is much different from others.

@simon At least my motivation for challenging the term is _not_ that AI is not actually intelligent, but to spark discussion about the level of abuse by AGI proponents. Just look at OpenAI’s mission statement: they are actively abusing what the “I” implies to the general public with a pompous vision, intentionally shifting the meaning of “I”. They should call themselves ClosedAGI instead. We should focus on “Useful Computation”, whatever paradigms that requires.

@cstross @lilithsaintcrow I do not think they said that they _violated_ copyright, but that a language corpus of the required size necessarily includes copyrighted material.

@lilithsaintcrow @cstross a) they wouldn’t have to, if it were fair use b) they cannot, given the size of the corpus and the sheer number of copyright holders c) not they (i.e. the researchers and startups doing the hundreds of other language models), cannot either. I admit though, that b) and c) are moot if not a), and then not only OpenAI would be DoA.

@aral @SearingTruth WW II, USAID when it was still functional, PEPFAR, Food for Peace program, UNICEF, GAVI, and a couple of humanitarian emergencies. Unfortunately they forgot who they could be, just like you did.
