@foone I feel as if a good way to defuse this is -- given that no program is ever complete, you always return to the code -- to limit yourself to just "How can I code this today so that the next time I see this code it won't make me sad?"

@ajroach42 Well, this is the good question. Is it like gorillas disarming gorilla traps -- they learned it from humans? Or have they been doing it for a long while now?

@foone There is the story that a whole bunch of them are "effective altruists" and that that basically boils down to a religion with a truly phenomenal negative amount of hubris. So. Yes.

@ZachWeinersmith Well, prove that p2 applies in this case. Or, better yet, have a sandwich.

@ajroach42 the only problem I had with the show -- and perhaps this is a uk perspective -- is that in every episode thousands of rounds of amunition were fired by all sides, that never hit anyone.

@geordie Well, I thought the coming of a global pandemic would spark a new dawn of understanding of public health. So.

@foone Or --- hear me out --- 6502. I'm not sure it's not already been open sourced. (And, BBC Basic...)

@ajroach42 Not sure if there is any connection but UK film censors have a long-standing ban on blood on a breast ...

@ZachWeinersmith perhaps his idea of plot is more zoomed-in than yours? "boy in love with girl who has made some sort of promise to his cousin whose dad is mean and has a prize pig"

@ZachWeinersmith Because "my country first" is a lie: populism at best, neo-fascism at worst. They don't actually care about that, just about the cruelty.(And if in ten years time it also transpires that many of these parties were getting funding from the exact same sources ... that won't generate much surprise with me.)

@ZachWeinersmith That's the problem with language -- the noise overtakes the signal. Words get less and less specific until they mean nothing.I remember when "troll" meant something specific, too, and it wasn't that long ago.

Okay, that's … what the fuck? That's amazing! We tend, I think, to imagine that the days of simple scientific 'miracles' – Newton and his prism, Fleming and penicillin – are at an end. Anything really useful will take years of work and a mountain of kit to make happen.Nope. Take tartrazine, the food colouring used in Doritos, and paint it onto your skin. Shine a red light on it. Your skin is transparent! How many medical applications does that have?!https://www.theguardian.com/science/article/2024/sep/05/common-food-dye-found-to-make-skin-and-muscle-temporarily-transparent

TIL that 2017ish thinkpads have post beeps so complex that you need an app to shazam them in order to make sense of them. I admit this helped me figure out my wife's dead laptop at a quarter to midnight, but honestly, it's still a very odd idea?
