@simon People point this out a lot. It's true.It implies that our own human minds do something fundamentally different. I am not convinced that's true.Our minds evolved. That guarantees the use of tricks. Different tricks, yes: humans are interested in far more than predicting text; we are grounded in a very different experience. But tricks.I think some cognitive dissonance is at play in the widespread, strident insistence that these large language models are just a trick.

@simon @jacob Humans also produce dangerous words. What if a human uses a tool to produce dangerous words? Dangerous for who? The Soviet Union restricted photo copying. Licensing predictive text is too broad as it may restrict autocomplete on my phone.Drawing the line is a very tricky issue.

@simon It's rather rich that the license of GPT-3 should be respected when training something, even though it is itself trained on all sorts of text with all sorts of licenses.So if I want to prevent any competing LLM to use my blog content all I need to do is put some GPT-3 output in it?

I show pictures of successes in my garden. There are quite a few I enjoy. But what I don't show is that my garden is always on the edge of chaos. Weeds are taking over. Paths need sweeping (and the cracks need weeding too). This year I have managed fairly well for my standards but it's still in that borderland.I try to be relaxed about it. I need to be careful not to compare with some neighboring plots that are much neater. Just enjoy the successes.#gardening #bloomscrolling

I have had to retune my intuitions about hash maps for Rust. In some cases scanning an array can be faster than a hash map lookup, due to cpu caches and the like! The algorithmic complexity of array scanning is worse but the real world performance can be much faster, for sufficiently small arrays.This kind of stuff is very unlikely in Python.#rustlang

I used C++ to write an artificial life simulation in the 1990s. Then in 1998 I discovered Python and didn't look back at C++. Python unleashed a joy in development for me.Fast forward decades of experience and maturing. Now I know Rust, which I enjoy using as well, and whole fields of software development that I left behind with C++ are opening back up.#python #rust

@foone Python is out, Guido van Rossum is Dutch. Rust is out too, as Graydon Hoare is Canadian. I think you can use JavaScript, though, but not TypeScript.

@futurebird I used to say that the US Democrats are to the right of the mainstream right wing party here in the Netherlands. Unfortunately we've had our own mainstreaming of the extreme right here in our last parliamentary elections, so that's not true anymore, but it was for a long time.
