If an event like the Siberian Traps were to occur today is it safe to say the most likely location is Yellowstone? No particular reason for asking.

My running theory is the End Permian happened because the trilobites were simply too powerful. They needed to be stoped and only the worst extinction event ever with endless lava flows... the Earth split like an open wound, hyper-canes crawling the surface like the red spot of Jupiter... only all that was enough to stop those remarkable arthropods. We, on the other hand? We may well be flick off of the earth like a flea. By our own petard. Whatever a petard is.

@futurebird As I understand it, the Yellowstone Caldera is more of the explode-y kind of eruptor. I think the caldera is also much more on the empty side with pressure being (safely) released through all the geysers. If Old Faithful stops, then we start worrying.

@futurebirdMy version has a eusocial trilobite civilization that oops caused the extinction event. But don't worry they left and are still out there in space somewhere.

@futurebird too powerful? Although trilobites had rebounded from the end-Cambrian and end-Ordovician events, the end-Devonian reduced them to a handful of species all in a single order, and after that they went into terminal decline. So few in number that until very recently it wasn't even clear they had survived to the end of the Permian, with some arguing they had gone extinct 10, 20, or even more millions of years earlier.

@futurebird A Petard is a domesticated wild Ard. They are large and strong and can lift you off your feet if you don't train them properly.

@futurebird i believe they're still down there, diminished and hiding in the cracks of the deep ocean where we've never looked. waiting, and dreaming of vengeance.

@futurebird I know you're a Tchaikovsky reader…have you read The Doors Of Eden? An (admittedly minor) plot point is immortal space-faring trilobites.

@futurebird the true, original children of Earth. Okay they dun goofed with the life almost dying bit but they pulled through and went out there.there may yet be distant relatives of humans who even now fight to survive somewhere beyond the heavens (cue theme music)
