@yura I'm pretty sure watching Eva when I was a kid is like 70% responsible for my taste in cute anime boys, nobody is as desperately sad and huggable as Shinji xD

@yura Usually when @Twokay gets migraines he takes the paracetamol, he says aspirin and ibuprofen are more effective but also have more noticeable side effects

@0xabad1dea wow, I expect institutions to over-index on tertiary qualifications but caring about *high school* is some next level nonsense :ww: (especially for open source work where much of the time you could just go look at someone's OSS commits as strong direct evidence!)

@0xabad1dea and it's such a bad way of measuring even that!I dropped out of high school at 14, by 15 I was busy working out a physics simulation for a space combat MUD I wrote in C ...

The coffee was tasty but we sure had trouble describing the differences between them, I’m the only native English speaker here and even I don’t know what some of these words even mean :ww:

The first non-opioid medication for post-surgery relief from severe pain was approved in the US this year. That's potentially a huge deal!My mum suffered from postpartum pain treated with oxycodone, and the subsequent addiction pretty much destroyed her and all her interpersonal relationships (among other factors)Suzetrigine targets the specific ion channels in external pain receptors directly, rather than the brain itself: https://www.worksinprogress.news/p/the-first-non-opioid-painkiller

@0xabad1dea yuhh I feel like Asimov would have found it very funny that we ended up with robots that think about the Three Laws of Robotics just because they happened to read his books

Ordered a whole genome sequencing test today! I realized they're cheap enough now that one can simply do that, curious to take a peek at my DNA 🧬 I'm just old enough to have been following along when the Human Genome Project was completed in 2003, at a cost of ~$3 billion. The kit I ordered cost me €400.From an IT perspective technological advancement in other fields often seems glacially slow, because working with atoms is so much harder-- but it sure happens nonetheless!

@Librus107 I ended up going with Dante Labs, which is the one I could find here in Europe; most of them are AmericanI did find various negative reviews from people saying their results were delayed for ages, but I'm not in a hurry so that doesn't worry me too muchThis was the page that persuaded me https://arep.med.harvard.edu/gmc/genome_services.html Because that is some super legit academic web design :ww: If/when I get the results I shall report on the validity!

I found a bug(?) in the new Rimworld update that so perfectly shows why simulation games are delightfulThere's an item added by the DLC called a "sentience catalyst" which you are supposed to use to e.g. increase the tricks your pet crab can doBUT if you get this rare mental break event where one of your colonists "runs wild", the game also uses this for the item interaction criteria! So now the captain of my gravship has superhuman intellect thanks to her return-to-monkey burnout escapade

Boyfriend had a fun IT problem today I was able to solve with some 2010-style ssh tunnel trickery! He wants to develop web app on his macbook. But app backend needs to read from a postgres db server, which is only accessible via VPN on a Windows laptop controlled by his employer (they don't issue macbooks)Solution: reverse ssh tunnel from Ubuntu VM on the Windows laptop opening a local port on the macbook which routes back through the tunnel to the db`ssh -R 5432:dbhost:5432 macbook`
