If you buy an Intel product you are directly funding the US government at this point. And I guess if you still work for Intel and haven't been fired yet Donald Trump is effectively now your boss 8)https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/22/intel-goverment-equity-stake.html

@Lana @raccoon Sounds a lot like track lube. It's incredibly thick, persistent and it's also water repellent. Anyone who has been out lubricating railway fishplates can vouch for its effectiveness.

@futurebird sounds right to me. Whilst there is good stuff and prices to be found the whole thing is set up like a casino game. Even when there is actual useful stuff it's gamed, put it in a cart wait a week and it magically finds the same item far cheaperJust as disturbing though is how much unsafe or plain illegal crap they pedal. Liability needs properly pinning on people like Amazon and Temu for illegal and unsafe goods

Good news for once - on site Jira is going away as a product. The bad news - it'll still exist as a cloud service.Still hopefully the compliance issues having someone else host all your customer bug reporting, security reports and business secrets will free some programmers from that particular part of the torment nexushttps://www.atlassian.com/blog/announcements/atlassian-ascend#jira #gdpr

Home Assistant is to home automation as autoconf was to code. It's enormous, sprawling, nobody knows how it works, you get it to go by pasting arcane runes you found on the internet and whilst it desperately needs replacing with something sane it is just about usable enough to stop people bothering.

@futurebird seems fishy to me. Tall people get more bad backs and after about 40 soaking it in the tub gets really useful. You can get different tub sizes anyway.A good installer can also lose most of the feet on kitchen units, or indeed add extra height for tall people.

@futurebird amusingly books are also excellent for insulation when you have a historic building Not allowed to add internal wall insulation but shelves solid packed with books, and books shoved in the gaps on top of the rows is just fine !

@tomjennings @brouhaha @Lydie a lot of random other flash just degrades too. USB sticks, SD cards, even on device firmware slowly dribbles it's brains out.

@tess old trope and factually dubious. Code is just an implementation of a set of processes, and processes can solve social problems. The fact you solve more social problems by removing than adding software is more about the fact people working in software and systems ought to be qualified in systems practice. If you think software can't help solve social problems then remove all the software from the water supply system and see how long society lasts.

@tess Also you can improve a system without really understanding how it works. You do it every time you read a book and learn something. Indeed Ashby's law says you can never understand yourself - yet self improvement is possibleYou can design effective systems when you don't know how people will use them It's harder and requires expertise. However the statement is mostly a misunderstanding. Systems evolve and the software design, implement, deploy, run away model is what is broken

If social media algorithms are bad and addictive then the fix isn't to stop kids accessing social media, the fix is to stop bad and addictive social media algorithms because that protects everyone.
