Early signs are claims that there would be a mass exodus of the rich from New York if Zohran Mamdani won the NY Mayoral election were, as we likely all suspected, nonsense; Rather, the rich seem to have been recommitting to leases on homes on Manhattan according to available property records for the last month. While the rich may worry about leftist agendas, they also have many more reasons *not* to move - from social networks to their children's education.#politics https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/dec/08/new-york-city-wealthy-mamdani-win

@ChrisMayLA6 Yet, the science speaks with a clear voice. High taxes, less wealth in the state. https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/state/taxes-affect-state-migration-trends-2023/Also note that it is not only the ultra rich who might or might not move, it also applies to many in the middle classes and up.

@h4890 aha, interesting data; of course this says nothing about federal taxes & what they support in each state, but interning nonetheless, thanks for this

@h4890 @ChrisMayLA6 cause and effect ? Do you have high taxes because low wealth equates to high service demand or vice versa or a bit of both ?

@ChrisMayLA6 You're very welcome! I think regardless of the result of the study, a politically neutral take away is that it is a complex problem, and that the total gain/loss of tax revenue depends on more factors that just the ultra-rich and how they react. The real result will only be able to be seen years after any proposed tax increases have been made.
