@w IIRC, the precise behavior depends on a few details of the situation, but the core reason for the behavior you mention is because the x clipboard is request-based rather than deposit-based.When you select or copy an entity in an x app, the app tells the X server "hey I have content for the clipboard." The app doesn't send the content to the server at this point. When you invoke the paste operation in another app, the receiver requests the content of the clipboard from the server, which requests it from the source app. When you close the source app before doing the paste, there's nobody to request the content from and the paste fails.(I'm glossing over a bunch of details that complicate the story, sorry.)

@w there's historical reasons why it works the way it does. Not very relevant to today's desktop, but it was the right choice at the time.

If your company, media org, school, nonprofit, or fraternal organization wants to participate in the fediverse, there are two reasonable ways to do it:1. Pay employees to run an instance.2. Pay a hosting company such as https://fedi.monster to run an instance for you.Making an account for an organization that has cashflow, on an instance that's run by volunteers and supported by individual contributions, is incredibly bad form.(Maybe some instances will decide to accept organizational accounts, possibly in return for a support fee; that's on them, and I'd be happy to hear about such decisions. But it's certainly not a default expectation!):boost_ok:

@tek @kalak451 I hope somebody has a moment to report this in a tusky issue! Other admins may benefit from finding the fix there, and / or maybe the app can adjust the bundle so that this isn't an issue! Cc @Tusky and @ConnyDuck

@ocdtrekkie @boyter @cloy admins have been asking website boy for allowlist based federation, for "review new servers" like the "review trending" admin tools, for any kind of collaborative blocklist tooling. Eugen has been very resistant to even admitting that there's a problem.

@niconiconi fuck me, we have this at workInt? It's a float.Enum? Float.Bool? Float.Bitset? That's just an int, my dear, and we already told you about ints.(Int, int) tuple? Packed into a float.String? Hash that shit into a uint32 and stick it in a float. Brute force on the receiving end to figure out what the original string was.

If a masto server turns on authorized fetch, does that break the "open in browser" function in tusky? (If it's relevant, my browser isn't logged in to any masto instance.)I use "open in browser" *all the time* to see replies that didn't federate to my instance.

So apparently a lawful intercept was running on a Germany-hosted xmpp server for the last few months, or possibly alternatively hetzner and linode infra was compromised to this end. https://notes.valdikss.org.ru/jabber.ru-mitm/The ops noticed because the MITM's letsencrypt cert expired. It's interesting to MITM with surreptitious ACME certs, it's pretty noticeable! You'd rather get a copy of the TLS private key off the server. But, I guess getting a RAM image from a dedicated server is a bit more noticeable than a 20 second Ethernet outage. (Hmmm, does IPMI and/or Intel ME have RAM access via the management plane?)Via snikket, https://fosstodon.org/@snikket_im/111274831152730579

@johncarlosbaez @josh that sounds like it needs trig, so I'll take a simpler stab at it. Eyeballing the video i think Phobos is about a quarter the diameter of the sun, so if the distance is cut in half and then half again, Phobos will be about 4x larger. (A very rough approximation but fine for napkin math.) So 1500 km from the surface is our target. 4500 km at 1.8 meters/year is 2.5 million years.Edit to add: the orbital velocity is already 2km/s, it'll be a bit faster with a smaller orbit. So totality will last for a few seconds...
