@edavies …and the line came back up about 45 minutes ago. Well done BT for getting it back up - pity a bit of rain could take out so many lines, though.

@fitheach @withaveeay @timttmy This is all of interest to me, too. I have PAYG with both EE and 3 SIMs for coverage and because the EE sometimes doesn't work for incoming calls even with all the bars but struggle to make enough calls to keep them both active.£6/month with Smarty would be way more than I spend now but 4GB of data would be useful.

@fitheach Yeah, different circumstances.Currently I don't have any mobile data - odd times I've added it to my PAYG accounts it's seemed to evaporate quicker than my usage or the time limits would seem to imply.@withaveeay @timttmy

@fitheach How does you not using contactless make things more secure unless you've had contactless disabled? If anything, typing your PIN into some random keyboard some minimum-wage worker's just pushed in your direction seems less secure than contactless.@ParadeGrotesque @potato_lisper

@fitheach I'd moved to Scotland by then but didn't vote as though legally I had a vote I didn't feel I was well enough established to really have one morally. OTOH, I'd bought the land for my house by then so maybe that was being too sensitive.Maybe my vote would have swung it 🤔

@fitheach @wim_v12e That'd be reasonable, assuming we can redo the Brexit vote on the same basis.Apart from the obvious (likely not going the way I want in this case) some sort of bias towards the status quo in constitutional referendums of this type seems reasonable but setting up effectively a non-secret ballot (why would No voters bother?) seems much less reasonable.Maybe abstentions should count as ½ a vote for the status quo?

@fitheach Yeah, it's difficult but I do feel there's a need for more than a simple 50%+1 to establish legitimacy, see Brexit. In Switzerland “[m]odifications to the constitution are subject to obligatory vote and require a double majority both of all voters nationally and of the cantons.” [¹] Requiring a majority of the Scottish parliamentary constituencies or regions as well as a simple majority might be a sensible counter-proposal.[¹] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_in_Switzerland#Constitutional_referendums_(Popular_initiatives)

@fitheach I don't see the distinction between conscription and national service. People on national service can be required to act as combatants from the Geneva convention point of view. I've met two people who were conscripted national servicemen who saw “action” in the Suez crisis.(One was a bit comic/sad - lecturer at college shot a donkey at night while guarding Akrotiri. The other was a bit more active, he parachuted into Egypt.)@vfrmedia

@fitheach One thing to be said for Russian conscription over British post-WWII conscription is that in theory Russian conscripts can't be ordered to serve abroad.Didn't stop conscripts getting beaten up to get them to sign on as “contract” soldiers who can be. But, I imagine it's probably a reason they're having these sham referendums in the occupied parts of Ukraine, so Putin can declare them Russia and send conscripts there.@vfrmedia

@fitheach Yes, I'm disagreeing with your other replies. Like the others here I'm arguing there's no distinction between conscription and compulsory national service. See for example the second sentence of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_service :“Conscription is mandatory national service.”which doesn't seem to be controversial on the Talk page. There's some more nuance further down on the specific UK legal term National Service but the basic point stands.@vfrmedia

@fitheach @pogodon octodon.social shows languages codes against each toot. I assume that's because it's using glitch[¹] fork of Mastodon.[¹] Sorry - can't remember its exact name.

@fitheach The language code shown is text. You can select the letters individually and copy and paste it as a string.Pretty sure it comes from the Mastodon language selector but I'll set this toot to Catalan and look on Octodon.@pogodon

@fitheach Do you need particular training to rent something like that? How much will it cost for the week? I imagine delivery and pickup are a significant part of it, i.e., 5 days is much less than 5 x 1 day.
