And I’m nothing if not pragmatic. After all, I work on cloud systems, and the big three are up to their neck in ICE contracts and US DoD business, and union busting. I’m not on a high horse, I’m culpable, but it doesn’t even feel like we can have the conversation, individually or collectively. It’s not *safe* to have this conversation.

If you are in #Infosec or #cybersecurity you probably already understand this, even if you haven’t consciously thought it. We are, at a pinch, allowed to talk about #burnout or #mentalHealth or #ToxicMasculinity or #alcoholism and #depression.But is it safe for you to ask your company to turn down a contract? Do you think your local con will accept your talk, and if they do, who in the audience is noting your name down? If you are already marginalised, all of this risk is much worse.

Here's a cool thing, #NZTwits - most of your data is now physically hosted in Aotearoa. Sure, the public stuff is federated out, but your profile, your DM's to other locals etc are all on our shores.When was the last time you had the option of data sovereignty? Australian feds can't just force your AWS/Azure data centre to give you without telling you. It's not a huge deal but it's nice.

@JeffHowell @aotearoa_ben the search is optimised for hashtags in a way Twitter is less, and one of the important things is they can be searched across the wider world - it’s recommended to add some to your profile, and to pin hashtags that you find useful so that you can review them every now and then to find new people or ideas.

@nickofnz I’d like to see an explicit policy commitment to welcome and house #ClimateRefugees with a particular focus on our Pacific neighbours, tied in with a 20y roadmap on how they plan to do it, including infrastructure investment budgeting. But then, I’m wacky that way.

I found out the other day that Numerical Control - ie CNC machines - were pushed by the US Air Force as a means to break shop floor unions. The early ones had no economic advantage but DID shift the type of labour from the floor to the office (who weren’t unionised).Just a fun thought when one considers “software is eating the world” and AI/ML trends.#Union #Tech #AIEthics

Useful term I discovered this week: “toxic mimicry”. It’s the pattern of substituting systems/organisations/services that look superficially like they fill a core societal need but in fact act to take up the space that a genuine system would fill, and only provide virtual nutrition.Examples:- 6pm TV news mimics public discourse- Malls mimic public spaces- Daycare mimics collective child rearingI like the term as it suggests something predatory and insidious.

I’m just remembering the time FB killed a bunch of small media companies by pretending that its video engagement was through the roof.And the time they non-consensually experimented with only showing awful things to certain users to see if it would isolate and depress them (it did).And the time they hosted the livestream of a mass shooting hate crime.And the time they enabled a genocide.Or Cambridge Analytica. JFC remembering facts and events is not hard.
