I would love to support Māori to set up dedicated instances; digital marae where you are in charge of the kawa and kaitiakitanga of your own data. You decide who can speak in the wharenui (join the instance) and on the marae atea (Federated timeline). You can even host an instance on a computer in your rohe if you want to. @strypey I’d like to support similar but as a pakeha myself I’m just semi-quietly waiting for if support is asked for. It could be pretty damn neat IMO.

Imagine any hapū can have their virtual marae, on a computer they control, under their own kawa. But all linked into a network, so they can visit each other's marae (with culturally appropriate protocols of course).

@HappyRumbletumI'll keep that in mind. A friend and I have started talking about setting up a hosting cooperative, starting with Mastodon instances (like what masto.host do). Based on previous experiences of trying and failing to do the same thing, we're going to start out simple, with a small group that already know each other. But if it takes it as I hope it will, we will be actively looking for more hands to this kind of stuff as paid work.
