@nicholas @stefano unfortunately my organisation can't really use it. We're a big enough organisation, if you make up ten random realistic sounding European language names, we probably have employees with one or two of those names. A significant portion of our employees have a number appended to their email address because someone else with the same name already worked there before them. And our mandate is such that we can't block random people from emailing us.

@stux I imagine living in a democratic country in Asia must feel similar.

@nicholas @stefano Even with a limited scope, we cannot block someone from sending emails to our organisation, just because they happen to have the same name as a C-level executive. That would risk depriving them of an essential service. Also, the CEO sending business emails from a personal email address would potentially create an embarrassing public scandal that would likely get the CEO fired and be career limiting for whoever approved such an exception.

@futurebird "based" comes down to "on crack" (i.e. freebase cocaine), doesn't it? To be based is to be impulsive, decisive, to not GAF in the way that a crackhead supposedly DGAF.At least, that's where I understood the term to come from.

@futurebird Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and allspice - it's a nice flavour combination. Goes well in coffee, cakes, pies (pumpkin but also apple and others). I imagine it goes well in breakfast cereal. The thing I find odd is how the whole thing gets associated with pumpkins, so much that it would make sense to assume the coffee (etc. etc.) has pumpkin in it.I like spiced coffee, but I do not think I would like spiced and pumpkined coffee.

@futurebird @albertcardona most machines are ok around me, but gas pumps where you pay at the pump will go into a screaming panic cycle if I touch them. Can't even start over, have to move the car to another pump.

@strypey not to mention electrically operated windows - anyone with a 20 year old vehicle has at least one window that won't open anymore. But the rare soul with a 40 year old vehicle can still open all their windows, because hand cranks never die.

@asie @gsuberland Wait, does the game cartridge actually have the game data on it, enabling it to be played? If so I'd say it's definitely a bootleg, regardless of where it's made or who sells it.A "reproduction" would for me imply more that it's a non-working prop. Not something that lets you play the game, but as decorative item - to establish time and place in a TV show by having period appropriate video game cartridges on the shelf for example.

@asie @gsuberland ... and now I'm thinking, for things that would have been covered by patent not copyright, a working "reproduction" would make sense - like a "reproduction" 19th Century Singer sewing machine could be a working reproduction or not - "bootleg" doesn't make sense. So apparently my distinction above isn't as systemic as it first seemed to me...

@futurebird @MxVerda @benh i have an electric kettle (110V North American standard) and an induction stove, and the stove is *way* faster than the kettle. If I wanted to get a meaningful volume of water boiling ASAP, I'd probably go with 1/4 of it in the kettle and 3/4 in a pot on the stove.

@burningTyger @kim_harding I've heard of some instances where - an organized community group or just a couple of friends started clearing bike lanes- this carried on for years- one day their machine broke or the person who was doing it got sick- citizens complained to city council that the bike lanes weren't being cleared- council was suprised to learn that they were ever cleared- that established expectation led the city to buy equipment and start clearing the bike lanes

@burningTyger @kim_harding So, yes, it should be the city doing the work. But there weren't enough people expecting the city to do it, until thousands of people thought the city was already doing it, and going back to the bad old days was a disappointing contrast.Sometimes you have to show people what's possible.

Gotta keep a couple pairs of uncomfortable underwear around so when you wear the last of the comfortable ones you're not just out of gitch, but you also remember to do the laundry.
