Off to the woods for the days to count sticks. Testing the data collection tool my team built and scouting for new potential features. One of the most important things developers can do when possible is actually use what they build along side the people who are supposed to use the tools. In this case it means going to a national forest and helping with the science we’re supporting.

I've been thinking a lot about psychological safety lately, particularly in the context of proposing changes to organizational leadership. There seem to be three classes of folks. 1. The folks who don't have psychological safety and won't propose change.2. The folks who have it, and may or may not propose change.3. The folks who are out of fucks, and absolutely will propose change.I suspect it's the last class that's best able to drive change. Does that match folks experiences?

@MLE_online it had the limited virtue of being a knock inhibitor, which i think puts it ahead of a lot of AI.

@futurebird it sounds you’re dealing with a self-fulfilling prophecy. regardless of how your student got there, they’ll need to overcome the idea that they’re definitely bad at something. i’ve had some success tricking people into doing the thing they think they’re bad at, and then gently pointing out that they’re pretty good at it.

@munin @JessTheUnstill it would be a nice if reasonable practices were the norm, but a look at the state of the software industry suggests reasonable practices are uncommon.

@munin @JessTheUnstill i’ve worked both sides on compliance, and checkbox compliance is definitely a sugnificant problem. I think folks like RMS helped builr this problem by setting stupid expectations about the value of software. People tend to not value what they don’t pay for and mindless compliance requests are part of that.
