Back during the second Iraq War, the GOP loved telling anti-war protesters that they should “support the troops”. Then, as now, I had a ready rebuttal. If you actually support the troops, don’t make them fight an unjust war. And when they come home, give them the support they need and deserve. Here’s yet another thing that stands out to me, as a constant student of history. I still remember when the GOP was “family values” this and “moral majority” that. Accurate or not, it was effective messaging.They still think they’re about that, but the gulf between their self-perception and reality has never been greater. I can’t stop thinking about this car I saw the other day, with a “Don’t Tread on Me” license plate frame and a “45” decal in the window. I could’ve sworn I saw at least one young child sitting in the back seat.It makes me wonder—how the fuck do conservative parents explain Trump’s behavior to their children? I also can’t stop thinking about how, for as long as I’ve been alive, conservatives have championed themselves as the party of morality and family values. During the Clinton administration, that actually worked, because Clinton wasn’t exactly a paragon of virtue.Trouble is, they’re trying the same shit today, and their guy makes 90s Bill Clinton look like a goddamn saint. To be clear, moral hypocrisy is nothing new to them. Back when they were impeaching Clinton, Newt Gingrich stepped down as Speaker because he had an inappropriate relationship of his own. And his replacement, Dennis Hastert? Holy shit. If you don’t already know what happened to him, look it up.But this is a new low. I’m glad Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. I suspected she would. I can’t claim to know her, but from everything I’ve seen, it would’ve been weird if she didn’t.But, not gonna lie, I had my doubts. The silence got far too uncomfortable. A thought popped into my head that suddenly made me re-evaluate the importance of voting, even though the popular vote doesn‘t determine who becomes president, and even when voting in states that are solid red or blue.I live in California. We have 54 electoral votes, and Harris will more than likely claim them. My one vote won’t matter as much as a vote in a swing state.But there’s something to be said about the psychological effect of big numbers, especially where Trump is concerned.

I can’t think of a better way of needling him than making him eat big numbers that aren’t going his way.Okay, yeah, Florida probably won’t turn blue this cycle. So what? Don’t give up.
