@dawnatella @gme Limiting the size of posts to a maximum of 500 characters is an arbitrary decision of Mastodon. There is no such limit in the ActivityPub protocol, and many other projects among those listed above do not have such a limitation.Admins of Mastodon instances can choose to raise the limit, if they’re willing to dig into the code to change it – I believe it is hardcoded, as developers have rejected proposals to make it configurable.

@alienghic Depends on the model. The Nitrokey Start is based on GnuK, the free software implementation of the OpenPGP card specification. It is indeed fully auditable. But the other models embed a smartcard chip to which they delegate cryptographic operations (including random number generation), and that chip may or may not be auditable. In fact AFAIK they don’t t even tell which chip they embed. I believe at some point they were using chips from ZeitControl, but I have no idea if that it is still the case.

@shalien @amberxorluci Many TPMs (that can be used to encrypt SSH keys, for example with GnuPG's tpmdaemon) also won't work with ECC keys -- at least not with Ed25519 keys.

Thanks to @bortzmeyer for this note on how to get TAI time.It was also not working by default on #Slackware, which does not provide the /usr/share/zoneinfo/leap-seconds.list file – it provides a /usr/share/zoneinfo/leapseconds file, which contains the same information but in a format that ntpd apparently cannot use.Blog Stéphane Bortzmeyer: Getting TAI time on a Debian machine

@bortzmeyer I fetch it from https://hpiers.obspm.fr/iers/bul/bulc/ntp/leap-seconds.list, which apparently is the primary source for this file (it’s exactly the same file as the one distributed by IANA anyway).

@alienghic At least by generating the keys on a computer, you have some control on which software you use and how they get their random numbers. With a token, your only input is when you choose which token to buy. Once you have the token, you can only hope that its RNG is indeed a good one – and if it turns out it’s not, there’s nothing you can do about it.

@alienghic The idea that generating the keys directly on the hardware token would be “more secure” is debatable, I think. In fact, given that there has been some known instances of hardware token being plagued by faulty random number generators, using them to generate private keys may actually result in keys that are less secure.Adding to that the impossibility of making a backup (as you already mentioned), I think generating the keys on a normal computer (possibly air-gapped), making a backup (to be stored offline), and then moving the keys to a token, is the best solution.

@davidrevoy Out of curiosity, what is this small device on the left of the tablet in the third picture? It looks like a custom keypad – I’m guessing it’s configured to give you fast access to some Krita tools? 😀I am curious about where you found that and if it was easy to configure it as you wanted under GNU/Linux.

@davidrevoy @Emi299 I had never heard about “demisexuality” before. Looking up this and other similar terms, I discovered that I am quite possibly “demiromantic” – I never suspected there was a name for that. Thanks for the opportunity to make me learn something.

@davidrevoy I wonder if you’ll receive a polite request to completely change the story, from someone who deeply respects your creative choices but doesn’t want to expose children to romantic relationships between characters of different species… 😁

@davidrevoy I can confirm that cat litter indeed works pretty well as a voltage stabilizer, this trick should be more widely known. 👍
